WIN DOW-WASH ERS PLATFORM'.
VYNo. 823,921.
To a/ZZ whom it may conceive.-`
'Be it known that we, COLBURN N,-C1'mrs TOFFEnsoN and JOHN F. LrNDBERG,-c1t1zens A of the United States, residing `at I-Iibbing, in
i knowledgeof the details kof construction of the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Washers Platforms, of which the following is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide an. improved platform or stage .designed to be detachably secured toand extend outwardly from a windowcasing forA the convenientuse of Window-washers, painters, or the like and which embodies an'improved construction whereby it is adaptable as a ready attachment for windowslof diferent widths and the casings or walls of which are of differ-1 -ent thicknesses. j
For a fulll description of the'inventipn and the merits thereof and also to acquirey a the means foreifecting the result reference is to be had'to the following description andac-r companying drawings, in-which- A Flgure 1 is a plan vlvl ofourj-ini 4roved platform. Fig. 2 is aside elevation t' ereof.
Y' Fig. 3 is a'vertical. section showing theatf tal sectional view ofthe said casing, showingtachment of the platform inoperative positionpwithin a windowcasing which is also shown partly in section. Fig. 4 is a horizon,-`
i v.a portion of the platform in the window in plan view. i Fig. y5 is a detail view.
' Corresponding and like parts 'are referred to inthe following description andindicated v in yall the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The platform proper, 1, in
` in abilybeveled, as shown at 3a, to conform tok the inclination of the window-sill on which the present instance comprises a suitable number of boards laid transversely upon and attached at their ends to longitudinally-extending stringers 2.
Intermediate their ends the` said stringers 2 have attached thereto downwardly-extendlegs 3, the lower ends of ,which are prefer'- they are designed to rest. The legs 3 are preferably braced by diagonal struts 4, which are secured at oneend thereto and at their other ends to the under side of the stringers 2,
near the outer ends 'of the latter. Preferably etallic strips or bands 5 are secured to the 'Specicaton' of Letters Patent. .Appiiman nea November 26,1905. seringue. 288,204

verging toward each otherandbeing secured forward ends andalso being-secured at their other ends to the rear .ends of the stringers 2.
8 designates a transversely-extending bar which is constructed in two sections 8a and 8b, .having their ends overlapped with a scarf'- joint and .arranged for extensible movement with. respect to each other. The'lapping end metallic` bearing-stripfjQ, havin `at one'end Ying-screw 10a, designed to impinge against be tightened to' hold the two sections of the to the under surface of the platform 1 at their.
a lug vor projection 9a, and `a jc amp l0 sur"-V rounds the two overlapping ends of the sec-r u tiens 8., andz8l0 ,and isprovided with .a clampopenings from the rear edge -of-t e rearmost y lboard to the downwardly-extending portions Besides the struts4 the platform 1. and the legs 3 lare inthe present instance suitably braced, as shown Iat 6 and 7 the braces 6 con-y one ofthe bearing-strips 9 and arranged to i transverse bar 8 in more or less extended po-` sition with respect to leach other. The lugs or projections 9a of the twobearing-strips are designedto abut against said clampl to limit the movement of said sections in one direction.
The bar 8 projects atveach end through the elongated openings provided at the rear ends of the bands 5 Vand is free to move through said openings between the bands land the ad-Y jacent portions of the stringers 2, and each projected end of the bar 8 is provided at top and bottom with a plate 1 1 and with an angular socket 12 between said plates, the said plates forming a bearing between which is pivotally secured oneend of a link 13. other end of each of said-links .13 is in turn band 5 and the adjacent portion of the Stringer 2, preferably by the same bolt 5b that connects said band tothe Stringer.
' In the practical application of our invention the platform is extended from the win- The I CO pivotally secured between the respective j 75 of eachsection'is preferably providedwlth a. v
dow-casing with the lower beveled ends of the legs 3 resting upon the window-sill A and with the legs abutting against the outer edge of the window-stool B. To maintain the platform from tilting downwardly and outwardly by its own wei ht or by the weight of the person standing t ereon, we have provided the improved construction of extensible bar 8, hereinbefore described, and in the application of the device to the window-casing the screw l0a of the clamp 10 is loosened suiciently to allow the sections of said bar to be extended so that the projecting ends will bear against the inner sidesv of the windowcasing C, whereupon the said clamp is a ain Itightened and the entire device is thus eld securely in an operative position.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a platform, supports therefor, a laterally-extending extensible bar connected to said platform, and means whereby the extension of said bar will effect its movement away from said support and vice versa.
2. A device of lthe character described comlprising a platform provided with supportingegs, a laterally-extending extensible bar, and a pivotal connection between the platform and the sections of said bar whereby as the same is extended it will move away from the le sl and-vice versa.
3. y device of. the character described "comprising a platform, stringers embodied (VIM. i
therein, vsupporting-le s connected to said platform, longitudinal y-extending bands securedjto said platform and stringers and providing at their rear ends elongated openings, an extensible sectional bar mounted to move through said openings, and links connecting the sections of said bar with the said stringers.
4. A device of the character described comprising a platform including longitudinally-extending stringers, legs secured to said stringers, bands secured to said platform and providing at their rear ends suitable openings, a transversely-extending sectional bar provided with overlapping ends, means for clamping the sections of said bar in dii'l'erently-extended positions, and links pivotally connecting theends of said bar with said stringers, said ends working through said openings.
5. A platform for the purpose set forth, comprising a platform proper embodying longitudinally-extending stringers, bands secured to said stringers and providing at their rear ends elongated openings, a transverselyextendin sectional bar having overlappimT ends, a c amping-band arranged to hold sai( sections in different extended positions, the ends of said sections working through the openings provided by said bands and provided at top and bottom with attachingplates, and links pivotally mounted between said plates at one end and to the stringers at the other ends, whereby the movement of said sections with respect to each other will Simultaneously move the bar as a whole in a direction at right angles to the movement of extension.
In testimony whereof we aliix our signatures in'presence of two witnesses.
