Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan, ,1, 1918.
Application filed April 25, 1916. Serial No. 93,376.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, YosrnsUKn Hmosn, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved combination ladder and window-jack which is simple and durable in construction and arranged for conveniently changing the device from an ordinary step ladder to a window-jack.
The invention consists principally of a ladder formed by a step section and a brace section pivotally connected with each other to permit of placing the sections at an angle to form an ordinary step ladder or a window-jack.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of same as will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the imgrovement arranged as an ordinary step lad Fig. 2 is a View of the same in section arranged as a window-jack and applied to a window with part of a building in section.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cleat hook.
The improved ladder consists of the side bars 1 and 2 connected across the top by a platform 3. The rear edge of members 1 and 2 are provided with the strip 5 to which are attached the cross connecting boards 4. The steps denoted by 6 are pivotally mounted as shown at 7 and on the inside of the side bars 1 and 2 are provided cleats 8, so arranged that when the steps 6 rest thereon they are in a substantially horizontal position.
Hinged to the top of side bars 1 and 2 is a rear brace frame, denoted in general by 10. This frame consists of the side bars 11 and cross braces 12, the lower ends of the side bars having a friction pad 13. A folding link 14.- connects the side bars 11 with 1 and 2, and I provide several holes 15 in the lat ter whereby the angular opening between these members may be varied. The rear edge of side bars 1 and 2 is provided with hooklike members 16 which are expressly adapted to enable these ends of the bars to be attached to the window sill as shown in Fig. 2.
Each of these members consists of strap 17 having the side flanges 18 and the hookshaped end 19. The inside of the channel shaped port-ion is provided with certain points 20 which are forced into the wood of the side bars when the member is fastened into place. Along the side of members 1 and 2 are also provided straps 21 into which posts 22 may be inserted and around the upper ends of these posts may be provided a cable 23 to prevent a person from falling sidewise when the device is used as a window-jack.
When this device is used as a ladder the steps 6 are turned until they rest on the cleats 8, thus forming steps enabling a person to easily mount to the broad platformlike top 8.
TVhen used in cleaning windows the members 16 are engaged on the inner ledge of the window sill, the brace member 10 resting against the outside walls of the building. The osts 22 are inserted in their sockets 21 and the steps 6 are rotated around until they rest on the strip 5, thus the step mem berg together with the boards 4 form a substantially continuous platform on which the operator may stand while cleaning the window.
hen not in use the ladder may be folded in the usual manner.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention it will be understood that minor changes may be made in detail and construction without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent 1. A combined step-ladder and windowjack comprising side bars, steps pivotally attached to said side bars, a 'brace frame connected to the upper ends of the side bars, and hooks on the lower end of said side bars.
2. A combined step-ladder and windowjack comprising side bars, steps pivotally attached to said side bars, fiat. members connecting said side bars, cleats adapted to hold said steps in a position parallel to said flat members or substantially at right angles thereto, a brace frame hinged to the top of for selectively supporting said steps parallel said side bars, and hooks attached to the with said flat members or at an angle with lower end of said side bars. respect thereto, means whereby said side bars I Z 3. A combined step ladder and Window may be engaged with a Window frame, and 5 jack comprising side bars, steps pivotally means for bracing said side bars.
supported by said side bars, flat members In testimony WhereofI afiix my signature. rigidly supported by said side bars, means YOSHISUKE HIROSE.
