UNITED v STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES BRIDGES, or-sAN FERNANDO, CALIFORNIA.
LADDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 270,008, dated January 2, 1883,, Application filed June 21, 1889 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES BRIDGES, of San Fernando, Los Angeles county, California, have invented a new and Improved Ladder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. i a
My invention relates to improvements in ladders; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangementof parts, as hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my im- Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the seat and foot-rest to be employed for fruitpicking, and Fig. 4; is a front elevation of the ladder and sectional elevation of the adjust- I lower ends of the side bars, a, are tenoned and shouldered, as shown at 0, suitably to enter between and rest on the parallel bars (I of the leveling foot attachment for theladder, having vertically-adjustable legs a for adjusting it on uneven ground. The said tenoned lower ends of the side bars, a, are entered between the blocks f, which confine the side bars laterally, and the foot-bars d are extended laterally for stability in that direction, and connected by brace-rods g with sides a, sufficiently above the foot for staying the ladder properly, the said braces being arranged to hook into eyes j of the ladder detachably, so that the foot attachment can be taken on readily at any time when the same is not required for use.
The seat 70 and the foot-rest Z, for use when picking fruit, are attached to parallel bars m,
connected together by them and by the clipbar a, suitably for resting on the'sides a of the ladder, while the clips 0 hook around bars a, and the lower extensions, 19, of foot-rest standards q, below the bars m,'secure the attachment on the side bars in a manner to allow it to shift along said side bars, the clips-0. being slipped on fromthe ends of saidbars a. The seat It is pivoted between the bars m at t, and it has points a, which project backward over a step b when the seat rests on the clip-bar n at the front of the bars m, and thereby the seat and foot-rest are supported whenever they are placed on the ladder.
The seat-frame and seat 70, either with or without the connected foot-rest, may be adjusted to greater height on the ladder by simply pushing the frame upward, the points a passing the successive rounds until said points pass the round desired, when the seat-will settle down and he firmly locked to the ladder. as shown in Fig. 2. To lower the seat it is swung on its pivots toward the ladder to disconnect the points u from the IOlJllJdS, when the seat-frame may slide down freely to any desired point.
For attaching the leg to so as to be readily connected and disconnected, a rod, on, Fig. 2, is located behind the upper step b, and the leg has a cross-bar, y, equal in length to the distance between side bars. a, so as to enter snugly between them, to which bar-hooks z are attached, so that they engage rod a; under it,
as shown in Fig. 2, and other hooks, z, are attached, so that when leg to is swung outward from the ladder, after booking onto rod a, said books a will hook over the upper edge of a step b and secure the leg, as shown in Fig. 1.
-'lhe leveling attachment, seat, and foot-rest attachment, and the leg to may all be readily detached when only a simple ladder is wanted,
and thus the ladder is useful for various purposes.
I am aware that a metallic strip has been attached below the upper round of a ladder to permit'of another ladder providedwith recessed plates to be passed between it and the able leveling attachment, consisting of the parallel-bars d, having blocks f between them, the
legs 0, adjustably secured between the said bars, and the braces g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7
2. The combination, with a ladder having the rod 00 located behind the upper step I), of
the leg w, having the cross-bar y, of a length equal to the distance between the side bars'of the ladder, and provided with hooks z 2, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The side bar's, m, clip-bar n, pivoted seat is, and foot-restLin combination with a ladder, and being secured adjustablythereon by books 0 of bar 1, projections 20 of the seat, and extensions 1; of the foot-rest, substantially as described.
CHARLES BRIDGES.
