Be it known that I, Josnrrr HORMISDAS GAGNIER, a citizen of the United States, re-
' siding at Fall River, in the State of Massachusetts, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Step-Ladders; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others-skilled in the art to which it appertains to make anduse the same.
The present invention relates to step ladders and an object of the present invention is to provide a step ladder which can be adjusted to various positions and heights, so that it may be used in various places no matter how irregular the support upon which it is mounted may be, or one which may be readily used when mounted upon a very narrow support.
With the above and other objects in view which will hereinafter appear as the description continues, the invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination and formation of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings has been shown a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details herein exhibited, but the right is hereby reserved to any changes, alterations or modifications to which recourse may be had that come within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the eficiency of the same.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the step ladder embodying the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same when set to one of its positions;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation when the ladder is set for another position;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail section of the detachable frame;
Fig. 5 is a detail front elevation;
Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail section of Fig. 2;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail section of Fig. 3; and,
Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view showing one of the particular uses of the ladder.
Referring more particularly to the detailed showings, it is stated that the reference characters throughout are the same for the several views.
"The ladder as herein shown comprises a m'ain section consisting of a pair of bars 1 and these bars are connected by the usual 4 rounds or steps 2. The upper end of each bar 1 has connected thereto a horizontal plate 3 and these plates are connected by means of the stationary section 4: of the top step of the ladder." Hingedly connectedto this section 4 is a swinging section 5 and this latter section may rest upon the plates 3 asbetter shown in 1 of the drawings or it may be folded back upon the section 4 as better shown in Figs. 6 and 7 Connected to the lower ends of the bars 1 are the extension bars 6 and these extension bars are adjustably connected through the slot and threaded bolt connections 7 as shown. By providing these extensions 6 the length of the bars 1 may be extended when it is desired to gain a particular height, or one of the bars may be made shorter than the other as illustrated in Fig. 5. Detachably connected to the plates 3 is a swinging frame and this swinging frame comprises a pair of parallel bars 8 which are connected by means of the transverse bars 9 and these bars 9have arranged therein a tapering recess 0r socket 10. The upper ends of the bars 8 are hingedly connected to the bars 3 by means of the rod 11 and this rod is provided with the winged nuts 12 which permit its removal when it is desired to disconnect the swinging frame. Hingedly connected to this swing- -ing frame is a support 13 which may be used for holding suitable articles while the step ladder is in use.- A detachable prop is also provided and this prop comprises a pair of bars 14c which converge toward their upper ends. These bars 14 are connected by means of a plurality of rounds or steps 15. The upper or smaller. end of this prop is adapted to be seated within the recess 10 when it is used for supporting the ladderas better illustrated in Figs. 1 and 4, but when only a narrow space is afiorded and it is desired to use the ladder this prop may be inverted as shown in Fig. 8 and the rounds 15 may be used as steps. This prop may also be used as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. When the prop is used as shown in Fig. 2- the hooks 16 carried by the swinging frame are placed over one of the rounds of the prop and the upper or smaller end of the prop is seated between the plates 3. This prop also carries a hook 17 which is adapted to engage one of the cross bars 9 of the swinging frame where it will be securely locked to this swinging frame. When it is desired to extend the height of the ladder the prop may be connected tothe main frame as shown in Figs. 3 and 7. The lower round 15 of the prop may be connect ed to the hooks 18 carried by the step 2 and the next adjacent round of the prop may rest within a recess 19 formed within the plates 3. The rounds 15 of this .prop are also provided with a reinforcing bar 20 which carries a loop 21 and this loop 21 isadapted to engage the pin 22 carried by one of the rounds 2 of th main section, whereby the prop may be secured to the main section of the ladder. Each of the rounds 2 of the main section of the ladder may be provided with the hooks 18 as shown so that the prop may be adjustably connected thereto when retained substantially in the position as shown in Fig. 3.
Having thus fully-described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a step ladder of the character described comprising a main section, a pair of plates secured to the upper end of said main section, a swinging frame detachably connected to said plates, a socket formed within said swinging frame, a prop,said prop comprising two bars converging toward their upper ends and the converging end of said prop adapted to rest within said socket.
