UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. ARMSTRONG, OF HUDSON, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND IRDNING AND BREAD BOARD.
S PECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 400,158, dated March 26, 1889. Application filed May 29, 1838- Serial No. 275,478. (No model.)
To (0% whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN C. ARMSTRONG, of Hudson, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Step- Ladder and Ironing and Bread Board; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is a combined step-ladder an d ironing and bread board; and it consists in certain novel features, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of my improved device arranged for use as a step-ladder. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing it arranged to support an ironing or bread board. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the bread-board, and Fig. 4c is a detail' sectional view showing the manner of locking the sections of the back brace together.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates a step-ladder of any approved construction, having a platform, a, at its upper end, and provided with a back brace, B, having its upper end pivoted to the platform a. The stepladder is further supplied with a bucket-rest, C, and the back brace, B, is composed of two members, B E the upper end of the member B being pivoted to the member B, above the lower end of the same, as shown. The member B is provided at its lower end with a cross-bar, (1, upon which is mounted a spring-actuated sliding bolt, D,
the end of which engages a socket, d, in the side bar of the lower member, B and thereby locks the two members together. The said bolt is arranged within a casing, d secured on the cross-bar d, and is pressed into engagement with the socket (Z by a coiled spring, (Z as will be readily understood upon reference to the drawings. The upper member of the back brace is further provided with a cross-bar, 0, having a central recess or notch, c, in its upper side, and said notch is engaged by the hooked end of a rod, 0, which is secured to one of the steps of the ladder. This rod thus prevents spreading of the device when it is set up for use as a stepladder. The lower member, B of the back brace is provided with a cross-bar, g, the inner or front edge of which is provided with notches g. The standards of the ladder are provided with the hooks F F, which are engaged by the notches g of the cross-bar 9 when the back brace is folded, as shown in Fig. 2, to form a support for the ironing or bread board, so that the brace will be securely held in said folded position.
The platform a is provided near its rear edge with the slots a, which receive the ends i of the ironing or bread board, when the same is placed in position for use, and the ironing or bread board is provided on its under .side with cleats 2" j, which, when the board is in positiombear against the bucketrest 0 and one of the cross-bars of the device to prevent accidental removal of the board.
\Vhen it is desired to convert the device from a step-ladder into a support for ironing .and bread boards, the spring-bolt is withdrawn from the socket d and the lower member of the back brace then folded forward, so as to bring the cross-bar g into engagement with the hooks F. The device is then placed in the position shown in Fig. 2, with the ends of the back brace and the ladder resting on the ground. The ironing or bread board is then placed in position, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the step-ladder A, having the platform a, with the slots (0' therein, hooks F F on the standards, and the back brace composed of two members, B B pivoted together and having thecross-bar g, of a board having ends i, which engage the slots a, as set forth.
2. Thecombination of the step-ladder having the hooks F F and the back brace comprising an upper member pivoted to the stepladder and a lower member pivoted to the upper member, and having a cross-bar, g,provided with notches g, adapted to engage the hooks F, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN G. ARMSTRONG.
