Specification of Letters Patent.
" Patented June 19, 1906.
i To all whom it may concern: 1
doorways; and it consists in the simple, du-
rable, and efiicient construction hereinafter described, and particularly defined in the.
' claim appended.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view illustrating parts of a door-casing and a swinging door and my improvements properly arranged relative to the casing and door. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 looking downwardly, and Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters designate corresponding arts in all of the views of the drawings, reerring to which A is a door-casing of the ordinary or any other suitable construction.
B is a swinging door, preferably a screendoor, hinged at a, to casing A.
C is the horizontal rotary fan of my improvements, and Dis the upright rotary fan thereof. v
As best shown in Fig. 1, the fan 0 comprises a shaft 1), journaled in brackets c, d, and e, fixed on the outer face of the upper bar of casing A, a blade 3, of galvanized sheet-iron or other suitable material, fixed with respect to and carried by the shaft, said blade extending longitudinally of the shaft from thebracket d to a point adjacent to the bracket e, and a drum E, preferably of wood,
' arranged on the shaft 6. The said drum E is provided in its inner end with a kerf h, Fig. 2, which receives the end of the blade f, whereby it will be seen that the blade is utilized to strongly hold the drum against turning with respect to the shaft 6 and the said blade, and this without the employment of extraneous devices. At its endremote from the blade f the drum E is provided with a metallic cap 9, the purpose of which is to prevent frictional Wear of the drum against the bracket 6.
The upright rotary fan D ismade up of a shaft m, journaled in lower and upper brackets n p on the outer face of the casing-stile fan adjacent to the swinging edge of door B; a blade 1", of galvanized sheet-iron or other suitable material, carried by the'shaft m; a ped, estal 8, preferably of wood, having a kerf in its upper end receiving the lower end of the blade 1" and also having a metallic cap t on its lower end adapted to prevent frictional wear of said lower end against the bracket 7, and a drum M, preferably of wood, arranged on the shaft m and having a kerf a, Fig. 3, in its lower end receiving the upper end of the blade 1', whereby it is strongly connected of itself to said blade, so as to turn therewith and transmit rotary motion thereto, as presently explained. On its upper end the drum M of fan D is provided with a metallic cap as, designed to revent frictional wear of said end against tile bracket 1).
T-is a coiled spring arranged on the shaft of the fan 0 between the brackets c and d and connected at one end toone bracket and at its opposite end to the shaft,
U is a guide-pulley attached to the doorca'sing at the right of the drum M, V a guidepulley attached to the door-casing at the left of the drum M, and W a cable connected to and wound on the drum E of fan 0, passed through the guide-pulley V in front of the drum M of fan D, through the guid'e-pulleyU and back of the drum M, and connected to the door B. In virtue of this construction it will be observed that when the door B is opened the cable W will be drawn off the drum E of fan 0, with the result that the fan 0 will be rotated and the spring T placed under tension. It will also be observed that incident to the opening of the door the stretch.
of cable intermediate the guide-pulley U and the door will by bearing against the drum M rapidly rotate the vertical fan D. When the door, having been opened to the extent desired, is released, the spring T will rotate the C in the direction-opposite to that first mentioned and by so doing will wind the cable on the drum E, rotate the fan D, and return to assist in returning the door to its closed position.
The rapid rotation of the fans above and at one side of the door incident to 0 closing of the door willobvious y frighten flies and deter the same from entering an apartment through the doorway.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that my improvements are adapted to be applied to an ordinary door-casing and door without ening and involving change in the structure thereof and fvligzhout the necessity of employing skilled a or.
Having fully described my invention, What desire to secure as claims by Letters Patent is- The combination of a door-casing, a swinging door, rotary fans mounted on the casing above and at one side of the door and each comprising a shaft, a blade carried by and fixed to each shaft, and a drum arranged on each shaft and having a kerf in its inner end receiving one end of the blade, whereby the drum is fixed to the shaft by the blade, a spring for rotating the fan above the ,door in 15 one direction, and a cable connected to the drum of the said fan and the swinging door and engaging the drum of the fan at the side of the door.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of tWo Witnesses.
PHILIP F. HODGES.
