Specification of Letters Patent.
mated June 19, 1906.
i iimhfiiali ms,1900. Serial No. 310,100. I
To all whom it may mam.- Be it known that I, ELMORE S. RICHARD- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmer, in the county of Defiance and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in drinking-fountains for poultry.
The object of the invention is to provide a drinking-fountain of this character having a plurality of troughs, each of which is independently and directly supplied from the tank or reservoir containing the water.
A further object is to rovide a drinking fountain having a flat en whereby the same may be setup in position to be conveniently filled with water.
With the above and other objects in view the inventionconsists of certain novelfeatures of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a drinking-fountain constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional View of the same, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the tank arranged in position for filling.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes a fountain, which may be formed of any suitable material and in any suitable shape, the same being here shown in rectangular form and is preferably constructed of galvanized sheet metal. The fountain 1 consists of a tank or reservoir 2, the front end 3 of which slants back at a suitable angle and stops short of the bottom to form a passage or opening 4:. Across the front end of the tank is arranged an upwardlyprojecting flange 5, which is secured to the bottom and end edges of the sides of the tank to form between itself and the inclined front end .of the tank a drinking space or trough 6. l
The ends of the flange 5 pro ect laterally beyond the sides of the tank and are rounded off, as shown at 7. To the rojecting ends of the fiange 5 are secured si e trough-strips 8,
said side troughs being closed at their rear ends by quadrant-shaped pieces 9. By concleaning of the same.
necting the trough-strips 8 to the curved or quadrant-shaped end pieces the troughs 10 willbe formed on each side of the tank 2, said troughs having a rounding or curved bottom at their outer sides, which will facilitate the In the side walls of the tank 2, adjacent to the front end thereof and near the bottom of the tank, are formed discharge passages or openings 12, by which the troughs 10 are supplied directly from the tank. By arranging the openings in the tank as herein shown and described each trough or watering-space will be independently supplied directly from the tank, so that should the water in either of the troughs become foul the foul water therein will not be communicated with the water in the other trough. It has also been found in practice that this arrangement of the feed-passages for the troughs will when the tank is filled with hot or warm water in cold weather prevent the freezing of the water within the troughs, owing to the fact that the water Within theclosed tank retains its heat for a long period, and as this water is fed directly to the troughs the water in said troughs will also be warmedto a certainextent and will remain unfrozen for a much longer period than it would if the side troughs were supplied with water from the front end trough to the fountain, as is done in the usual construction of drinking-fountains.
When it is desired to fill the tank, the same is set up on the end, as shown in Fig. 4, and
the water poured into the front or upper end thereof. The inclined front end wall 3 greatly facilitates the passage of water into the tank, while by forming the back ends of the side troughs fiat and flush with the adj acent end of the tank the latter may be readily set up and supported in position for filling. If desired, a suitable bail or handle 13 may 'be attached to the front end of the tank 2 to facilitate the carrying of the fountain.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the constuction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined by the appended claim. I
Having thus described my invention, what IIO I claim as new and desire to secure by Letbelow the line of the trough, substantially as ters Patent, is described.
A drinking-fountain consisting of a tank In testimony whereof I have hereunto set having an inwardly-inclined front end, a my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 5 flange projectingfrom the bottom of said nesses.
tank, and side troughs connected to said flange and extending tothe'rear of the tank, ELMORE RICHARDSON the sides of'said tank abutting against the Witnesses: inner Wall of the front flange, said tank being CLYDE R. NORWAY,
10 provided with openings in the sides thereof H. L. FAIRGHILD.
