. Radiator-Valve, of which the following is a;
specification.
- This invention relates to automatic air and vacuum valves forattachment to steam-radlators and similar structures for controlling the flow of steam and air therethrough, and has for its object to improve the construction and increase the efficiency of devices of this character.
With these and other objects in view, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter fully described and claimed.
- In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which correspondin parts are denoted by like designating c aracters, is illustrated the preferred form of embodiment of the inventioncapable of carrying the same into practical operation.
In the drawing the figure is a sectional elevation of the improved device applied.
The improved device-consists of a casing or shell 10, avin a contracted u per end or neck 1 1 externa ly or internally threaded and with a closure 12 screwed upon the bottom of the casing 10 and provided with a stud 14,
extending upwardly therefrom into the interior of the casing. The casing or shell 10 is also provided with a nipple 15, extending from one side intermediate the ends for coupling to the radiator, a portion of which is indicated at 16, the connection being made where the air-valve is usually located.
Fitting into the contracted neck11 is a threaded plug 17, provided with a. wrenchhead 18, by which the plug may be inserted and removed and also to enable thepllug to be readily adjusted longitudinally of t e casing and its neck. The plug 17 is provided with a central aperture or port 19, merging.

Inserted into the shell or casing 10 and leading l eing indicated by the the nipple 15 is a drama e-tube 32, the terminal 0 the tube within t e shell 10 being enlarged, as at 33, while the terminal 34 wlthin the radiator-tube 16 extends below the terminal 33, whereby a siphon, structure is provided which operates to effectually dram the device of any accumulations of water of condensation. By enlarging the inwithin the radiator or the attachments thereto the element 31 will remain in liquid form thence into the radiator-tube 16 ,there is no steam-pressure or heat therefrom and with the flexible ends 28 29 of the casing 27 collapsed and the valve 30 unseated.
When steam is turned on, the air within the radiator is expelled through the nipple 15 and thence through the port 19 and escapeapertures 21, an overcoming the gravlty of the valve 25, escapes through the aper tures 24. If the air-pressure thus escaping is less than the slight weight of the valve 25, the outside pressure will close the valve and prevent the entrance of air to the device or cause a vacuum therein which materially accelerates the action. When the heat of the steam has increased sufliciently to effect vap-' orization of the element 31', the latter in expanding-elevates the casing 27 by expanding the bottom member 29 against the stud 14 and at the same time expands the top member 28, and thus causes the valve 30 to close the port 20 and shut off the further outflow and effectually obviates the waste of steam. The steam will thus be retained in the radiator members where its presence is required, as will be obvious.

It will be noted t at the nipple is located intermediate the ends of the casing 10, so that the entering steam strikes the inner casing upon the side and obviates the tendency of the steam to elevate the casing and cause the valve to close prematurely. This is an important feature of the invention and materially increases the efficiency of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, an outer shell having an intermediate inlet and with a contracted upper portion interiorly threaded and with a detachable closure at the lower end rovided with a stud extending into the sh l, a threaded plug engaging said portion and provided with a wrench-head upon the upper part having transverse escape-apertures and with a vertical aperture intersecting said escapeapertures, the lower end of said vertical aperture expanded into a valve-seat, and a casing disposed in said shell and provided with expansible ends and containmg a vaporizable element, one of said expansible ends bearing u on said stud and the other of said expansi le ends carrying a valve for engagement with said valve-seat when the vaporizable element is subjected to heat and expands said ends.
2. In a device of the class described, an outer shell having an intermediate inlet and with a contracted upper portion interiorly threaded and with a detachable closure at the lower end provided with a stud extending into the shell, a threaded plug engaging said threaded contracted portion and provided with a wrench-head upon the upper part having transverse escape-apertures and with a vertical aperture expanded into a valve-seat, a casing disposed in said shell aml provided with expansible ends and containing a vaporizable element one of said ends bearing upon said stud and the other of said ends can rying a valve for engagement with said valveseat when the vaporizable element is subjected to heat and expands said ends, a cap engaging the exterior y-threaded terminal of said contracted portion and provided with an internal valve-seat and with transverse discharge-apertures, and a valve seated upon said valve-seat.
