NONSIPHON TRAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15, 1921. Serial No. 445,199.
To all whom 2'25 may concern.
Be it known that I, SnLwYN P1. BLACK s'roNn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Nonsiphon Trap, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to traps for in stallation in pumping systems and the primary object of the invention is to provide a trap which will prevent the formation of a siphon when the waste pipe extends upwardly for more than three or four floors in a building.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a trap of this character which will be entirely automatic in its operation and which will ,be installed in the plumbing system so that the waste water will be received in the trap and cause it to operate whereby a siphonwill be prevented thus permitting the free flow of water so that the waste may be rapidly discharged.
Other objects of the invention will appear upon consideration of the following detail description and accompanying drawings, wherein 2- The figure illustrates a longitudinal sec tion through the trap constructed in accordance with my invention.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the body 1 of the trap is of cylindrical formation and has its upper and lower ends closed by removable caps 2 and 3 respectively. The upper cap is provided with screw threads adapted to be engaged with screw threads on the upper end of the valve or trap body and the lower cap 3 is attached in the same manner. The lower cap 3, however, is provided with a central opening 4 adapted to communicate with the interior of the waste pipe 5 which is connected to the cap 3 by means of a suitable coupling member 6. The coupling member may be oi any preferred type and is preferablyfitted with a packing material to prevent leakage. The cap 3 is provided on its interior surface with an upstanding portion '7 terminating in a valve seat 8 which is adapted to receive a gravity disk valve 9 pivotally mounted as indicated at 10 so that the valve may be moved to open and closed position.
, Mounted for reciprocation within the valve body 1 is a piston 11 which is connected by a rod 12 to the valve 9 as shown to advantage in the drawing.
Near the lower end of the body 1 and extending outwardly therefrom is a nipple 13 communicating with the interior of the body and adapted to be connected to the inlet pipe 14 which is provided with a V-trap 15' of the conventional form. This inlet pipe is connected as shown to the nipple 13 by means of a coupling member 15 which is also provided with packing material. to prevent leakage.
In operation, the inlet pipe will permit the waste water to be discharged in the body of the trap 1 thus causing the piston 11 to rise within the body and thereby pull the valve 9 to open position whereby the outlet opening through the waste pipe will be open for permitting the water to be discharged through the waste pipe. lVhen the pressure of water stops, the piston 11 will drop within the body and the valve 9 will thereby be closed since the valve is connected to the piston through the medium of the rod 12. The water remaining in the trap will act as a seal in the usual manner and the operation will prevent the formation of a siphon which so often occurs in the usual types of traps when they are installed on floors higher than the third or fourth floor in a tall building.

In a sewerage system, the combination with a waste pipe, of a trap comprising a cylindrical body having its lower end apertnred and connected with said waste pipe, an annular collar surrounding the aperture at the lower end to provide a valve seat, a valve pivoted at one side of the annular collar, so it may be seated or unseated, a piston mounted for reciprocation within said body, a piston rod pivotally connecting the piston and valve, and an inlet pipe leading into the body at one side.
