Be it known that l, FRANK E. KINGSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements iu Vacuum-Valves; and l do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in vacuum-valves, such, for instance, as are used in connection with steam-radiators and the like.
The object of the invention is to provide a valve of this character having an auxiliaryvalve chamber and valve whereby a sudden load, such as would be produced by a flood of water in the pipes, is provided for and the` water diverted from the main valve and conducted through the auxiliary-valve chamber and valve to the outlet-pipe leading to the vacuum-pump.
Another object is to provide a vacuumvalve having an automatically-operated auxiliary relief-valve constructed and arranged in such a manner that the same cannot be readily tampered with.
lVith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
ln the accompanying drawing is shown a vertical sectional view of a vacuum-valve constructed in accordance with the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the valve-casing, having arranged therein a main-valve chamber 2, with which connects an integrally-formed pipe or nipple 3, exteriorly threaded on its outer end, whereby the same may be coupled with the pipe leading to the vacuum-pump. (Not shown.) On the casing 1 is an intergrallyformed apertured nipple 4, having a threaded bore which communicates with the valvechamber 2, and in which is adapted to be screwed a plug-valve 5, said valve having a conical inner end adapted to be engaged with the seat 6 in the inner end of the passage 7, formed in the opposite end wall of the valvechamber 2 and opening into a receiving-chamber S in the valve-casing. The nipple 4 is provided on its outer end with exterior screwthreads to receive a threaded cap 9, adapted to be screwed thereon. A washer 10 is preferably arranged between the end of the nipple 4 and the cap 9, as shown.
In the valve-casing 1 above the mainl valve chamber 2 is arranged an auxiliaryvalve chamber 12, the upper end of which is closed by a threaded plug 13. Thelower end of the auxiliary-valve chamber 12 communicates with the receiving-chamber 8 through a port or passage 14. ln the lower wall of the valve-chamber 12 is formed a discharge port or passage 15, which communicates with the main-valve chamber 2 and through the latter with the discharge-nipple 3'. The port or passage 15 has arranged therein a valve-seat, with which is adapted to be automatically engaged a 'float or gravity valve 16, said valve being of hollow sheet metal construction and is preferably cylindrical in form, having a rounded lower end to engage the seat 15 in the lower wall of the valvechamber, said lower wall being inclined in all directions toward said seat, whereby the valve will be directed to the latter after being floated and opened by the passage of water into the chamber 12.
Over the open end of the receiving-chamber 8 is preferably arranged a copper strainer 17, with which is engaged the ilanged inner end of an inlet-pipe 18, said pipe and strainer being held in place by a coupling nut or cap 19, which is adapted to be screwed onto the threaded end of the casing 1, as shown. The cap or nut 19 is provided on its outer end with an inwardly-projecting annular flange, between which and the ilange on the inletpipe 1S is arranged a lead gasket or washer 20.
In operation the plug-valve 5 is adjusted as desired with relation to said seat, as
shown, after which the screw-cap 9 is applied and tampering with the valve thereby prevented. Should a sudden load or flood of water pass through the inlet-pipe 1S and strainer 17 into the receiving-chamber 8 which is greater in volume than said chamber can accommodate, the Water will overflow or pass through the passage 14 into the auxiliary chamber 12. The waterthus entering the chamber 12 will i'loat the auxiliary valve 16, opening the passage 15 and permitting the water to escape through said passage and the main-valve chamber 2 into the nipple 3, connecting with the outlet-pipe. By thus providing the relief-valve 16 to coact with the main valve 15 all sudden loads or floods of water entering the inlet-chamber 8 will be automatically discharged.
It will be noted that the relief-valve is constructed without a stem, thus requiring no packing or stu'H'ing box7 and that the operation of said relief or auxiliary valve is entirely automatic.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

In a vacuum-valve device, a casing having a main chamber and a receiving-chamber auxiliary chamber and adapted to seat upon' the passage between the auxiliary chamber and main chamber.
