IMPROVED DEVICE FOR HOLDING GUT NAILS WHILE BEING HEADED.
Gite firlgetnlt Itftfl'ti! min ilgttt fitters fiatttt ant mating tart n1. tip: 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DENNIS SAVERY, of Wheeling, in the county of Ohio, and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Nail Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improvement. I
Figure 2 is a side view of the same, with the anvil-block and griper shown in rec, the latter being raised above the nail-block, shown 'in blue lines. I
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The nature of this invention relates to the action of the griping-lever or griper, so called, and operates to retract the griper from contact with the nail-blankafter the latter has been headed.
It is always desirable'in the operation of nail-machines to have the griper retracted as speedily'as possible, and various devices have been used to accomplish this object, bnt'none heretofore have accomplished the retracting in as perfect and instantaneous manner as is doneby my invention. 7
It consists ofa U-shaped spring, one-end of which is aifixed to the cam-end of the griper, and the other clasps or bears against on that side of the cam-shaft which is opposite the griper, thus holding the end of the griper against the shaft, and byits tension, actuating the griper against the shaft instantaneously after the cam has passed the tappet-projection. on the griper.
In the drawings- A is the cam-shaft, B the cam thereon, and G the griping-lever, having a tappet, a.
D is the U-shaped spring, afiixed to the end of the griping-lever, as shown, and bearing against the opposite side of the shaft A.
A plate, I), is afiixed, by bolts or other suitable means, to the proximate side of the spring at that point,
and the said plate bears a leather or other porous pad to soften the action of the spring and return the lubricating-material.
E E are the trunnions or vibrating centre of the griper.
As the cam 13 passes the tappet a, the spring retracts the griper instantaneously, as will be obvious, and at each revolution the cam is lubricated by its passage in contact with the pad e, which is saturated with the lubricating-material.
In fig. 2 the griper a is shown in red attached to the griping-lever O, and in a raised position above the nail-blank. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The arrangement of the lever C, tappet a, spring I), plate 6, pad e, cam B, and shaft A, in the manner and for the purpose specified. 7
DENNIS SAVERY.
