Description

No. 823,343. PATENTED JUNE 12. 1903. 3. E. LUCAS.
TRUNK PASIEHHZIR.`
APPLIOATION FILED' JULYe. 1905.
CHRISTIAN E. LUCAS, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
TRUNK-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
Application filed July 6,1905. Serial No. 268.552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN E. LUcAs, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have made a certain new and useful Improvement in Trunk-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to trunk-fasteners, the obj ect of said invention being to provide a trunk which will be convenient of fastening and also secure and one that may be set close to the wall in use and may be opened without moving from said wall, the details of all of which are hereinafter fully specified.
The invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the novel form of hinge. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the cover just above the oint between it and the box portion of the trunk. Fig. 4 is a detail in plan of the bolt of the lock, showing same detached. Fig. 5 shows fragmentary details of the pin-and-socket ends of the metallic straps around the trunk. Fig. 6 is a detail view, in side elevation, of the pin-andsocket strap ends shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view in elevation of the back of a trunk, exhibiting the manner of engaging the pinand-socket parts.
In the figures like reference characters are uniformly employed in the designation yof corresponding elements in all the views.
The trunk c and cover b may obviously be of any desired form of construction, but have extending completely around them, severed where crossing the joint between the cover and box portion, bands c, which are provided where they cross the said joint at the back of the trunk with sockets at d and interengaging points or lugs e, which by moving the cover backwardly along the top of the box a may be caused to engage, and so interlock and prevent the lifting of the back side ofthe cover b. At the oint where these bands c cross the joint in ont of the trunk the free ends of said bands are provided with knuckles f, which are adapted to come into alinement when the cover b is moved backwardly, as specified, and into which the pins g on the bolt h enter to lock the trunk.
As best shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the bolt 7L consists of a straight bar of metal having the pins g set therein and bent parallel thereto, but offset therefrom, while on the back of said bar is a bow-spring i, secured to same by its middle and adapted to spring either of its ends away from said bar. The bar h is slidably seated in a mortise in the front of the trunk, and below said mortise is a recess for the spring i, but shorter than same by the distance of movement of the bar h in locking and unlocking, the said spring c' being so set on the bar that one of its ends will engage the end of said recess when the trunk is locked, and the other end will likewise spring into and engage the other end ofthe said recess when the trunk is unlocked.
At y' in Fig. l are shown holes for the introduction of a hook-key adapted to withdraw the desired end of the spring i from the engagement just named with either end of the said recess. This will obviously permit the movement of the bar 7i. longitudinally to lock and unlock the trunk. Thus it will be seen that by unlocking the cover, as aforesaid, the same maybe drawn forward, so as to disengage the pin and socket in the back, and the said cover will be then easily lifted off or raised. Now in order to hinge the said cover it is necessary to provide a hinge which will permit of this forward movement of the cover, which I provide for as follows: 7c represents curved metal bars, there being one in each end of the trunk, their lower ends being secured to the ends of the trunk near the lower back corner, and their upper ends being secured to the cover correlatively near its lower back corners and between the end of the trunk and the partition m.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is`
1. In a trunk-fastener, a body, a cover for said body, provided with means to permit a lateral movement of the cover relative to the said body, straps encircling the said cover and body and provided upon one side with separable interengaging means and upon the opposite side with registering loops, and a slidable member arranged for insertion throu h the registering loop.
2. Fn a trunk-fastener, a body, a cover arranged to permit a lateral movement of the said cover relative to the body, straps en- IOO IIO
circling the ysaid cover and body, and provided upon the rearward side with separable interlocking means adjacent the line between the cover and body, loops formed upon said straps at the forward side of the trunk adjacent the connecting-lines between the body and cover7 and proportioned to register when the cover is in closed condition., a bar mounted upon the said body and arranged to slide longitudinally thereof, and pins carried by the bar and arranged to be inserted through the registering loops of the straps.
3. In a trunl -fastener, a body, a cover proportioned to close the said body, means arranged to permit a lateral movementof the cover relative to the body, straps encircling the trunk and body and provided at the rearward side with means arranged to interlock when the cover is in closed and registering position, loops formed upon said strap at zo v tering position, a bar mounted upon said ybody and arranged for longitudinal movement relative thereto, pins carried by said bar and positioned for insertion through the registering loops when the cover is in closed and registering position, and a resilient member carried by said bar and arranged to lock the said bar at either extremes oi its movement.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHRISTIAN E. LUCAS.
