TRUNK STRUCTURE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Pnonn MYRI-IOLM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Volga, in the county of Brookings and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trunk Structures, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in combination trunks and beds and more particularly to the disposition of the bedding therein and also to the manner of retaining the parts in a given relation.

With these and further objects in view, as will in part hereinafter become apparent, and in part be stated, the invention comprises a trunk body formed of pivot-ally connected sections, interiorily disposed means or looking the sections together, and an openable cover adapted to enable access to the interior lock.

The invention also comprises adjustable trunk sections, bedding adapted to be detachably mounted therein, and means adapted to engage the trunk section overhanging the bedding and retaining the same against displacement.

The invention comprises certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter specified and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :F igure 1 is a view structure embodying the feature of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical central section therethrough with the parts indicated in their open condition.

Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the parts as seen in Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a longitudinal vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4- 1 of Fig. 3. said device preferably consisting of a springpressed latch 3 carried by one end of one of the trunk sections engaging a cooperating keeper 4 carried by the adjacent end of the other section, that is, the end adjacent when the sections are closed.

A cover or lid 5 is provided on one of the trunk sections 1 and serves as a cover for the complete trunk, said cover being hinged to the respective section by hinges 6, 6 and being adapted to be locked in closed position by any suitable locking device 7 adapted to be manipulated by a key from the exterior of the trunk.

Extending along the inner face of each of the side walls of each section 1 is a reinforcing preferably metallic plate 8 and the upper edge of each of the sections when in their open position is formed with recesses or pockets 9 just outside of the respective plates 8 for enabling the insertion of the shanks of hooks 10 over the edge of the respective plate 8, the several hooks 10 being fixed to the bed sheet or fabric 11, the sheet being fixed along its edges about reinforcing rods 12 to which the hooks 10 are connected. Appropriate tabs 13 are connected to the sheet 11 for facilitating application of plates 8 with the shanks of the hooks extending into the pockets 9. At various points along the length of the edges of the sheet 11 the side walls of the section 1 are formed with apertures 1-1 for the reception of the shanks of brackets or retainers 15 which are disposed to be detachably inserted into the apertures 14 for causing the brackets or retainers to overhang the adjacent rods 12 and thus effectively lock the rods and connected parts against movement in a direction effecting the release of the hooks 10. The brackets 15 are readily removable and when the parts are to be collapsed so that the trunk can be closed, they are removed and the hooks 1O withdrawn so that the fabric or sheet 11 may be folded and placed in the bottom of one of the trunk sections, preferably the one without the lid.

Each trunk section 1 has a plate or portion 16 of its end wall detachable, the plate 16 forming a part of the end wall of each section adjacent to the other section, so that when the sections are in their open posi tion the removable end pieces 16 may be withdrawn and thus leave no ridges midway in the length of the sheet 11 when it is stretched in place by the application of the hooks 10. When the sections are closed, however, the detachable portions or plates 16 are positively held in place by virtue of the fact that the end port-ions of said plates lie in vertical grooves formed in the side walls of th respective sections 1. The section 1 provided with the cover or top 5 is preferably provided with cross straps 17 for providing a compartment between said straps and the cover 5 adapted to receive garments or wearing apparel generally while the remaining portion of the trunk is utilized for receiving the folded parts of the bed when not in use.

Disposed exteriorly of the trunk sections the said sections are provided with guiding eyes or loops 18, 18 adapted to receive the shanks of detachable legs 19, which legs are designed to support the trunk sections in an elevated position while disposed for use as a bed. the shanks are withdrawn from the loops 1S and said legs are preferably inserted in the section of th trunk containing the fabric or sheet 11. One of the sections 1 is preferably formed in its side walls adjacent the end remote from the hinges 2 with mortises 20 adapted to receive tenons 21 projecting from the corresponding parts of the other section so that when the sections are being brought together proper and effective registration will be assured, the tenons also serving to prevent undue strain on the hinges 2 during shipment from torsional stresses to which the respective sections may be subjected.
