ATTORNEYS Il l Il I lllllll'l-"Illl `IINITED sTATEs PATENT oEEIoE RICHARD R. CRAMER, OF MARION, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JACOB F. KNEPPER, OF MARION, INDIANA.
BURIAL-GASKET.A
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 12, 1906.
cement or plastic casket having embedded in its inner and outer surfaces suitable strips to which draperies and ornaments may be attached.
It is furthermore myobject to provide vav device of the character described that will be Y strong, durable, eflicient and simple, and
. peries may be secured to the casket.
coiparatively inexpensive to make.
ith the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction and operation, a referable embodiment of which is describe in the specication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved casket. Fig. 2 isa longitudinal vertical sectional view, andnFig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line :I: of Fig. 1.
In the drawings the numeral 1 desi nates the casket-body, which is suitably s aped and formed from cement or any other suitable plastic material. In molding the casket-body the inner angle at the intersection of the sides and ends and the bottom is filled in, as indicated at 2, in order to strengthen the structure at the said point. Near the top and bottom of the sides and ends of the body 1 I embed on the inside and outside continuous strips 3, preferably formed of Wood 'and having their ex osed surface lyin Aflush with the surfaces ofi-)the said sides and` ends. These stri s 3 are dovetailed in cross-section and are p aced in osition when the casket- 'body 'is being molded. These strips are provided'for the p ose of receiving nails or tacks by which suitable ornaments and drax It will therefore be a parent that various soft materials other tllian wood might be em loyed. In the upper and lower surface of the bottom of the casket-body I provide longitudinal strips 4, like the strips 3 and arranged in the same manner. From the foregoing it will be I cover the` same.
construction of a casket,
obvious that adequate provision is made for securely fastening draperies and other coveringsto the casket-body. Along each side of the casket-body I embed suitable bolts 5, whichproject beyond the outer surface of the sides and provide means to which suitable handles :may be secured. l
A suitably-shaped cement lid 6 is provided on its under surface with a groove 7, adapted to receive the upper edges of the sidesand ends of the casket-body, and thus efficiently Ifpdesired, suitable elastic gaskets 8 may be arranged in the groove 7, so as to provide an air-tight joint. I embed in the upper portions of the sides and ends of the `casket-body suitable bolts 9, which are adapted to project through the lid 6 and receive nuts 10 for the purpose of securely holding the lid in place. Oa 'ng out the usual provide the 11d 6 near one end with a sight-opening, around which is formed a ledge 11, adapted to receive a pane of glass or other transparent sheet 12. About the opening I embed bolts 13, projecting upwardly and adapted to pass through the reduced edges of a cover-panel 14, which is fastened down over the glass by means of nuts 15, engaged on the bolts 13. This panel 14 may be removed and a view of the face of the corpse had. The lid of the casket, as well as the panel-cover, may be suitably draped or covered and the scheme of ornamentation carried out, as it willbe apparent that by draping and covering the casket-body the same is ornamented and given an artistic appearance, which relieves it of the unsightliness Where the cement or plastic material is exposed to view.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cement or plastic burial-casket havmg strips of soft material embedded 1n 1t s Inner and outer surfaces, the exposed portions of the said stri s lying substantially flush with the said surfaces.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD E. CRAMER.
