Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
Application filed December 2, 1905 Serial No. 290.020-
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, AUGUST GUss ScHRIcK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hennessey, in the county of Kingfisher and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Picture-Frames,
, of which the following is a specification.
p the backing locked in My invention pertains to improvements in picture-frames, and more particularly to the means for enabling instantaneous removal and insertion of the picture and the backing thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like characters of reference designate'similar parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a rear view in perspective of aframe formed in accordance with my invention, illustrating position and Fig. 2 is a like view illustratin the icture and backing in position and t e 100 'ng means for the latter in open position.
The frame 1 is formed in the usual manner of side and end rails having mitered joints 2. The inner longitudinal sides of one end rail and both side rails of the frame are formed with grooves 3, which are of sufficient width to freely accommodate the picture 4 and the backing 5 thereof. The opposite end rail of the frame has its rear face cut away, as indicated at 6, the cut-away part being bounded by lines which aline with the bottoms of grooves 3 of the side rails and the longitudinal side edges of the said end rail, the top face of the cut-away portion lyin in the same planev as the outermost sides of t e grooves 3 of the side rails. The said cut-away portion 6 thus constitutes a passage-Way which is of the same Width as the distance between the bottoms of grooves 3 on opposite sides of the frame, throu h which the picture and, its backing may be Within or removed from the frame.
For the purpose of locking the icture and the backing within the frame I provide a hinged member '7', which normally closes the passage-way. This member 7 is formed of a section of material of a length and width to freely 'enter the passage-Way and, as illus trated at 8, is hingedto the end rail of the frame bearing cut-away portion 6. The in freely slid when being'placed her side edge of member 7 is formed with a cut out portion extending throughout the length thereof and which forms a shoulder 10 and a tongue 11, the latter overlying and engaging the backing and the, shoulder engagthereby retaining the same in position and against movement. Pivoted thumb-buttons 12 are provided, one for each end of member 7, which are secured to the side rails at points adjacent the passage-way to allow ing the end edges of the picture and backing,
the buttons to overlie and engage the memher 7, and thus prevent movement of the latter. The backing is preferably provided -with a hand-grip 14, which may be in the nature of a strip of any suitable material rigidly aflixed thereto. By merely releasing the buttons from engagement with member ,7 the latter may be turned upon its hinges to become free of the passage-way, thus enabling the picture and its backing to be positioned with respect to or removed from the frame.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A picture-frame formed of end and side rails, one of said end rails and both of saidside rails being formed with rooves extendingthroughouttheir inner si es, the opposite end rail having its rear face cut away, the cut away portion being bounded by lines alinin' with the bottoms of said grooves of the si e rails and the longitudinal side edges of the last-named end rail, the, top face of saidcut-away portion lying in the same plane as the outermost sides ofsaid grooves of the side rails, a hinged member occu 'ying said cut-away portion and formed wit a tongue and a shoulder, and means for engagement with said hinged member to retain the same against movement. A g
2. A picture-frame formed of end and side rails, one of said end rails and both of said side rails being formed with grooves extending throughout their inner sides, the opposite end. rail having its rear face cut away to constitute an extension of the passageway formed by said grooves of the side rails,
- means for closing said passage-way consisting of a member hinged at its outer end to said I movement. I
lastmamed end rail, end prbvided on its opposite end with a shoulder which terminates ,abpoints below the inner longitudinal side edge of said last named 'raii, and a tongue 5 which extends beyond said shoulder, and means for retaining said member against I messes.
