Be it known that I LEE F. HAMMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Preventing the Deceptive Refilling of Bottles; and I do declare the followin to be a.
full, clear, and exact description of t e invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and the characters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottles; and my object is to produce a device which may be applied to any ordinary bottle in such a manner that when the bottle is once emptied it cannot be filled again without the same being detected, thus preventing spurious goods from being put into bottles supposed to contain goods of a higher or different quality. This object I accomplish by providing a false neck having a protruding top, which must be broken before the bottle can be emptied and which once removed cannot be replaced on the same bottle, and by such other construction as will appear more fully by a perusal of this specification and the claim appended.
In referring to the drawing similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The figure of the drawing is a sectional view of my improved device.
In said drawing, 1 designates the neck proper of the bottle, said neck being provided with a groove 2, following the interior periphery of the said neck. In using the device I provide a false neck 3, cemented into the said neck and having a flaring portion 3 extending above the top of said neck. Said false neck is provided with a groove 4, following the periphery thereof and adapted to coincide with the groove 2, any of the surplus cement filling into said grooves thus serving to more securely cement the said false neck into the neck proper.
The said false neck is also provided with a groove 7, following the upper interior periphery of said false neck.
5 is an ordinary cork stopper inserted in the false neck 3 and extending to a level just even With the top of the neck proper, and 6 is a non-adhesive wad arranged above said cork.
8 designates glass cement poured into the false neck 3 above the wad 6 and filling into the groove-7.
9 is a glass cap inserted above the cement 8 and lapping the top of the said false neck 3.
In emptying the bottle the false neck 3, or rather the portion 3, must be broken off at the point where it enters the neck proper, and the cork 5 may be then removed. As the portion 3 cannot be replaced, its absence is an indication that the said bottle has been opened.
The Wad 6 prevents the cement 8 from reaching the cork 5.
I have now entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific detail, as I may make various changes in practice which will fall fairly Within the scope of my claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a bottle the combination of a neck provided with a groove following the interior periphery thereof, a false neck inserted in said neck and provided with a groove following the periphery of said false neck and coinciding with said last-named groove, cement in said grooves, a flaring portion of said false neck projecting above the said neck proper, said false neck being also provided with a groove following the upper interior periphery of said false neck, a' cork inserted in said false neck and reaching a level equal to the top of the said neck proper, a wad arranged above said. cork, cement filling the space above said wad and filling into the last-named groove, and a glass cap arranged above said cement and overlapping the top of said false neck as set forth fully herein.
