Description

PATBNTED JUNE 5, 1906 G. KLANKE.
I LEG FOR TABLES.
INVENTOR Amy UNITED STATES GEORGE KLANKE, OF NEW BREMEN, OHIO.
LEG FOR TABLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 5, 1906.
Application filed January 11, 1906- Serial No. 295,566.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE KLANKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bremen, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Legs for Tables, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tables, and especially to table-legs of that kind used in knockdown tables wherein the legs are made detachable as desired; and the object is to provide a detachable leg for a table which may be firmly held to the tableframe, as will be fully specified and delineated in the drawings.
The invention is fully and clearly illustrated in the annexed drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification.
Reference being had to the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view, in elevation, of a table, showing the improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the leg, showing in detail the means for attaching the same to the table.
In the drawings, A designates the top of a table, and B the depending side boards or flanges thereof. These may be of the usual construction.
O designates the leg, which is made up of two outer strips 1 2 and a central strip 3, held in place by cementation to the other strips. The central strip 3 before being secured in place between the outside strips is provided with a transversely-arranged mortise 4, made to receive and hold a metal threaded nut 5 and has a vertical socket 6, leading from the top of the leg and opening into the mortise. In the passage of the socket 6 is arranged a bolt 7, the lower end portion of which is provided with left-hand screwthreads and screws into the nut 5, and at its upper end portion is provided with righthand screw-threads to receive a clamping or fastening nut 8, substantially as shown.
D designates a cross plate or piece which is laid on the tops of opposite legs, with its ends lodged snugly against the inner faces of the depending side plates of the table. The fastening-bolts are projected through the ends of the cross-pieces, as indicated, and tightened up, and when the legs are in the desired position in the table fastening-screws 9 are projected through the sides of the table into the ends of the cross-pieces or into the upper portion of the legs and the legs are held firmly in true position, but are readily detachable by simply removing the fasteningscrews 9.
It may be stated that after the central strip has been provided with the nut-seat and the socket leading thereto and the nut positioned therein the other strips may be glued thereto, and then the leg may be turned to the shape desired.
It will be observed that the cross-pieces between the legs do not reach to the under face of the table-top, so that a space is left affording room for unscrewing the clampingnuts.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A table-leg fastener for knockdown tables, comprising a leg made of three or more vertical strips, the central one of which is provided with a transversely-arranged mortise anda vertical bolt-passage leading thereto, a threaded nut disposed in the mortise, a fastening-bolt projected into the bolt-passage and engaging the nut in the mortise in the leg, and a clamping-nut on the bolt.
2. The combination with a table, of detachable legs, each comprising three or more vertical strips, the central strip of each leg being provided with a transversely-arranged mortise and a vertical bolt-passage leading thereto, a threaded bolt in the passage and engaging the nut in the mortise, cross-pieces laid on the upper ends of the legs and having the fastening-bolts projected through their ends, and clamping-nuts on the bolts to clamp the cross-pieces to the legs.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE KLANKE.
