' CARRIAGE-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,221, dated; July 15, 1851.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUsTAvUs L. HAUss- KNEoHT, of the city and county of New companyin Haven, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springsof Carriages and other Vehicles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the acg drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichi t Figure 1, is a side elevation, showing the spring attached to the axle and its union with the body, (one of the running wheels being removed). Fig. 2 is a plan. 3
The same letters of reference indicate similar parts in both figures. t
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a C spring combined with a semi-elliptic spring positioned transversely with the axle, the lower part of the spring being attached to the axle, and thebody of the vehicle resting upon the upper partor inner extremity of the semielliptic spring, also being connected by flexible strap or band to the C spring, the strap or band passing around and over the top end of the C spring, and the point of attachment or support of the body in relation to the combined spring or springs being such as to insure great flexibility and strength.
To enableothers skilled in the artto make and use my invention, I will proceed more minutely to describe it.
A is a piece joined to or forming partof the body of a vehicle.
B is one of the. axles (say the hind one) and D D the running wheels.
E is a metal brace or strap lapping around the sides and bottom of the axle, to which it is secured, and having arms extending on either side in a transverse direction with the axle. j
F, is the upper half or portion .ofa semielliptic spring, made fast on its interior end.
to the piece A and having a joint (a) at its outer end where it meets, and is connected with the one end of the under half, or por tion G forming together withthe portion F the semi-elliptic spring.
The portion G is bolted or otherwise made fast to the arms of the brace E and is extended and bent from the point where its semi-elliptic termination would be, so as to form a C spring.
H, I is a flexible band or strap surround ing the outer surface of the C spring, being made fast by loop at its one end to the outside arm of the brace E, and its other end, being split or made double, connected by hook or loop, I), to the body piece A, a
buckle c servingto tighten up and secure it thereto. I j
The spring or springs H, and F, G, are
constructed of any suitable number of leaves, or layers, to give the necessary strength and elasticity. The piece A where it is joined to the springs (and which is here designed to represent the under part of the vehicle body near the back,) forms its union with, or point of support on the springs, on one side of a perpendicular line passing through the junction of the C with the semielliptic spring, the effect of which by the pull on the C spring through the band I will produce great freedom of action in the C spring, and the upper portion F of the semi-elliptic spring in being attached by the joint (4 to the lower half or portion G will contribute to establish an increased elasticity. Any number of springs so constructed and attached may be used, and the minor details I eUsTAv s L. HAUSSKNEOHT.
