Application filed-May 1%, 1003. Serial No. 157,667.
To (Ll/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1', Cunnnns G. CURTLSL a.
citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of liianhattan, city of New Kern,
State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful improvement in Elastic- Fluid Turbines, of which the ljollowmg 1s a description.
The object I have in view is to secure the.
adjustment of the stationary and movable elements which form the passage-way to" the elastic fluid in the turbine with relation to each other so as to ad st the clearances be tween these parts and maintain the minimum effective cleai'iiiice, and particularly to enable thisto be done While the turbine is running. I
In carrying out my invention the inten mediatesl-i. 6., the stationary vanes which convey the elastic fluid from one set of moving vanes to anotherare carried by a cover ingdate mounted to slide in ways upon the shell and adapted to have the necessary amount of movement on such ways without uncovering the opening in the shell. This covering-plate is clamped to the shell by any suitable device, such as bolts passing through slots in the plate, and. is adjustable by a screw or screws when such clamping-bolts are loosened. The nozzle is also made adjustable with respect to the moving vanes, and
this may be accomplished by adjusting the entire shell upon the shaft by mounting, the shell so as to slide in ways upon the base. The shell is clamped to the baseby suitable devices, such as bolts passing through slots, and is adjusted longitudinally by a screw or screws when the clamping-bolts are loosened. The wheel carrying the moving vanes is held against longitudinal movement by means of collars on the shaft. The movement of the shell with respect to the wheel adjusts both the nozzle and the intermediates with respect to the moving vanes, while the movement of the covering-plate carrying the intermediates upon the shell enables the adjustment of the intermediates independently of the nozzle and with respect to the moving vanes. It is evident that either or both of these adjustments can be employed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a top view oi the turbine with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation and partial section of the turbine. "Fig. 3 is on end. vation the turbine with parts broken away, and i is a perspective view showing the heepenplate and screw for djusting the iii-- termedietes detached h'om the turbine en separated from each other.
The of the turbine has end pedestals 1 for supporting the shaft-bearin Th end pedestals l are connected with. side hedestals 3 for supporlin the shell. The shell 4 is mode in halves divided horizonlnl at the shaft and provided with shilling-boxes 5, through which the shaft pass s. The two halves of the shell are bolted together by angcs 6, which are in turn bolted to plate 7 resting upon guideways 8 on the side p .lestals The plates Ynreclunmcd to thew; 8 by bolts 9, passing through slots in {he plates, to permit of limited movement of the plates upon. the ways. The side pod-- estals 3 or connected at one end l a cross-- bar 10, in which is mounted the adjustm scrcw 11. The inner end of this screw is threaded and engages with the threaded opening in :2. block 12, secured to the lower half of the shell 4. By turning the screw 1?. the shell 4 can he moved a limited distance toward and away from the cross-bur l l). 'lliis can only he done when the clamping-bolls 5) are loosened. After the desired movement is secured the bolts 9 are tightened, clarnpingg the shell to the base in the position to which it is adjusted. The shaft 13 is carried by the bearings 2,having collars 14 on opposite sides of these bearings to hold it against longitudinnl movement. The shaft. passes through the smiling-boxes 5 and carries within the shell the wheel 15, upon which are mounted the rows of movable vanes 16. The stulionui'y intermediate vanes 17 are carried by a block 18, which is'sttechod to and depends from the covering-plate 19. This coveringqilate closes an opening 20 in the top oi the shell, through which tl e internicdiaics mu y be removed. The plate is clamped upon the shell by cla-lnpingbolts 21, passing through elongated holes or slots in the plate, so as to pen mit of the movement of the plate upon the shell to a limited extent length-rise of the fluid passage-way. The plate .1 e is guided in this movement by guidewoys formed by flanges 22 on the sides of the upper portion of the shell. To secure the movenuznt of ti plate 19 upon the shell, there is provided a screw 23, which is held by a keeper-plate 24, attached to the exhaust-hood 25. The screw 23-engages a screw-threaded opening in the end of the covering-plate 19. When the clamping-bolts 21 are loosened, this coveringplate can be moved on the shell a limited distance without uncovering the opening 20 by turning the screw 23. The nozzle 26 is attached to the shell.
It is evident that by turning the screw 11 the entire shell can be adjusted with reference to the wheel, thus adjusting the nozzle and intermediates simultaneously with reference to the moving vanes carried .by the wheel. By turning the screw 23 the intermediates can be adjusted with reference to the moving vanes carried by the wheel. Both these adjustments can be effected while the turbine is running.
What I claim is.

In an elastic-fluid turbine, the combination with the casing and the wheel therein carrying two or more rows of moving vanes, of one or more sets of intermediate vanes car- 'ried by a support which is adjustable lengthwise of the fluid passage-way so as to adjust the clearances between the moving and stationary vanes, substantially as set forth.
2. 6. In an elastic-fluid turbine, the combination with the casing, the nozzle carried thereby, and the wheel within the casing carrying \the moving vanes and held against displacement, of means for moving the casing lengthwise of the wheel-shaft, the stationary intermediate vanes carried by a vcoveringglplate secured to the casing, and means for a justing the covering-plate upon the casing, substantially'as set forth.
7. In an elastic-fluid turbine, the combination with the casing and the nozzle and stationary intermediates carried thereby, of the wheel Within the casing carrying moving vanes, the said wheel being held against dis placement lengthwise of the shaft, means for adjusting the position of the casing upon the shaft so as to adjust the clearances between J the moving and stationary parts of the turbine, and means for adjusting the intermediates in relation to the casing, substantially as set forth.
8. In an elastic-fluid turbine, the combination with the casing and the nozzle and stationary intermediates carried thereby, of the wheel within the casing carrying moving vanes, the said wheel being held against displacement lengthwise of the shaft, means for adjusting the position of the casing upon the shaft so as to adjust the clearances between the moving and stationary parts of the turbine, means for clamping the shell in each position of adjustment and means for adjusting the intermediates in relation to the easing, substantially as set forth.

In an elasticfluid turbine, the combination with the casing and the wheel therein carrying two or more rows of moving vanes, of one or more sets of intermediate vanes, and means for adjusting the intermediate vanes lengthwise of the fluid passage-way so as to adjust the clearances between the moving. and stationary vanes, substantially as set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 5th day of May, 1903.
