PERCY M. ELLIOTT, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO Q & H COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Patented May 29, 1906.
DOOR-HANGER.
N 0. 821,630. Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERoY M. ELLIOTT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Hangers, of which the following is a specification and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
he invention relates to hangers for sliding doors for freight-cars; and its object is to provide means for clearing the track which supports the door and upon which the doorhangers travel, removing therefrom snow, ice, or cinders.
The invention consists, broadly, in the plow or scraper carried upon and projecting in advance of the hanger and being immedi ately above and having its lower face parallel with the track upon which it is intended to run. Preferably, though not necessarily, the plow or scraper is attached to or formedintegral with the hanger, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of a railway-car and its door. Fig. 2 is a detail section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are details of some of the parts, showing modifications.
In the drawings there is shown at 10 a portion of the side wall of a car, at 11 a portion of a door, at 12 the track which supports the door, at 13 one of the door-hangers, at 14 the roller of such a hanger running on the track 12, and at 15 a housing or cap covering or inclosing the roller.
All of the parts above named are in common use in the forms shown in the drawings and many other forms. The present invention consists in providing a plow or scraper which shall travel over the track in advance of the roller 14, so as to remove any impediment. Such tracks are exposed and in practice frequently become covered with snow or ice or cinders to such an extent that the door cannot readily be opened without first removing such accumulation. It frequently happens that the door must be quickly opened for the purpose of gaining access to the inte rior of the car during a short stop of the train, and annoying delays occur from the tedious operation of clearing the track with such tools as may be available.
As illustrated in the drawings, the plow or scraper is formed as a part of the hanger 13 and integral therewith. In the type of hanger illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which the wheel is inclosed within a hood 15, the side walls of the hood are carried downwardly, and at their lower end deflect outwardly, forming a plow, as shown at 16, on each side of the hood. This plow terminates immediately above the track 12, its edge projecting forwardly and encountering any obstacle or accumulation upon the track. Preferably, but not necessarily, this advance edge is oblique to the direction of movement, as indicated at 17, its inner end projecting forwardly, whereby the material encountered is deflected outwardly.
While I have referred to the plow, when applied to the hooded form of housing for the wheel, as being formed by deflecting the lower end of the sides of the hood outwardly, it will be seen that the hood may be given the truncated-cone form, as illustrated at 18 in Figs. 4: and 5, the lower edges of the side walls constituting the plow and being directed forwardly because of the shape of the hood itself.
In Figs. 6 and 7 there is shown form 19 of hanger-head, and in this instance the head is prolonged laterally and its ends carried down almost to the plane of the track, as shown at 20, thereby forming the plow, and the face of the plow is preferably oblique to the line of travel, as indicated at 21, for the purpose already stated.
claimas my invention- 1. In combination, a car door hanger adapted to travel on a track, a plow carried by the hanger and arranged to travel over and in proximity with the horizontal surface of the track.
2. In combination, a car door hanger adapted to travel on a track, a plow carried by the hanger and arranged to travel over and in proximity with the horizontal surface the cage of the track, the face of the plow being 010- 4. Acar-doorhangerhavingthelower edges lique to the direction of travel. of the end walls of itshead directed forwardly 3. In combination, a car-door, and a supand being approximately horizontal.
porting-hanger adapted to run on a track PERCY M. ELLIOTT. 5 and having a forwardly-projecting plow, the Witnesses:
lower face of which is adjacent to the plane LOUIS K. GILLSON, of bearing of the hanger. J. M. HOPKINS.
