Specification of Letters Pater one @ONEBTRUOTHQN.
Patented May 22, 1906.,
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS C. l'IER'ItMANN,
a citizen olthe. United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have inlowing is a fulL'cIear,
vented a certain new and useful Im )IOVG- merit in Car-Construction, of'which the l'ol-' and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s, forming part of this specification, in whic Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of a car, illustratin my improvement; and Bi 2 is a detail view illustrating the manner 0 making the stake or post used in my improved car construction.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in car'construction, and par-- ticularly to the stake or 0st used to reinforce the side and end We 1s. Heretofore it has usually been the practice to make such stakes or posts of pressed steel, which necessitates special dies and several operations in the manufacture of the stake. Rolled angles and bars of various cross-sections have also been employed. The dificulty, however, in the use of rolled material heretofore employed is that the same cross-sectional areaprevails throughout the length of the stake, which in pressed-steel construction is obviated by tapering the'stake from the bottom to theitop. Inside usset-plates have also been employed, and t cos have been secured to the side. walls of the car and extend down to the floor, to which the riveted. The inclined ed post may or may not gle or. flange. V v v The obieot of my present invention is to go of the stake or be reinforced by an anutilize rolled sections which are cut to the desired length, after WiliGhtilG web is sheared diagonally, and where it is desired to have the web'extend through the floor and be riv-' eted to the underframing of the car the flanges may also be cut away near the lower edges of the stake, or the flange may be left in the web and to thefioor, as is well under stood in car construction. By shearing the q of an underframing for base-flange is position and a connectingangle riveted toweb diagonally it is obvious that l, obtain a tapered stake possessing the strength inci-- dent to such a formation and in addition am enabled to get two stakes out of one piece of rolled material. While 1 have shown the channel-beam as the rolled member from which stakes are made, it is obvious'that libeains, Z-beams, or beams of other cross-sections may be manipulated as herein montioned. v
In the drawings i have shown. a vertical sectional view through one end of a gondola car in which 1 is the side well 2, the end wall;
3, the floor; 4, the drul t-sill,' 5, the end. sill,
and 6 is the platiorunplate.
7 is the stake, whose [hinge is riveted to the end Wall of the car, said flange being cut away just above the floonline, so that the web may extend beneath the floor and borivetod to the dreftsill.
In Fig. 2 l have shown a section of rolled channel-beam as it is operated upon to produce two stakes. Where the stake is used in connection with the side wail of the car, it is obvious that the web may extend through the floor and be riveted to the cross-bearers or transversely-arranged fioor-supportsin the same manner as said webs are riveted to the draftsills.
Having thus described the invention, what desired to be secured is claimed as new, and by Letters Patent, is'
' The combination with the wall of the car, supporting the floor, astake composed, of a portion of a rrfiled flanged membcrw'hose web is cut diagornilly and whose flanged portion is riveted to the well of the car, said flange being cutaway above the floor-line,'-anol said web ortlon extending beneath the floor line being riveted to a member of the under-framing, sub
stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto eifix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses,"
this 2d day of February, 1906.
