WRENCH- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Applicaticnrled September 25, 1905. Serial No. 280,022.
T all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gambrills, in the county of Anne Arundel and State of Maryland, have invented certain .new and useful Improvements in Vrenches;
and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a wrench which will be simple, strong, and durable in construction, eflicient in operation, the sliding jaw of which may be quickly and easily adjusted and firmly held in its adjust ed position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arran ement of arts, as will be hereinafter descri ed ande aimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 3 1s a longitu inal sectional view.
Referring more particularl to the drawings, 1 denotes the wrench, w ich consists of a stationary jaw 2, having a shank or stem 3, a movable or sliding aw 4, having a stem or shank 5, and an integral handle 6, the inner side' of said handle 6 being curved outwardly toward its outer end, as shown. The stem of the sliding jaw is also provided with a longitudinallydisposed slot 7, through which is adapted to project a post 8, which is pivotally secured to the stationary jawshank 3 and projects laterally and at right angles from the inner side of said shank. On end of the post 8 is formed a pawl or og 9, the inner face of which is preferably serrated or provided with teeth 10, adapted to engage the serrated or toothed outer side of the movable-j aw shank when the latter is brought into engagement therewith, thus holding said movable jaw and shank in their adjusted position.
On the inner end of the stationaryjaw shank is secured a lateral right-angularlyprojecting bail-shaped guide 12, through the outer portion of which the handle end of the movable-j aw shank is adapted to slide. Pivotally mounted in the bail-shaped guide 12 between the movable-j aw shank and the inner end of thestationary-jaw shank is an operating-handle 13, said handle bein provided on its inner face adjacent to the pivotal end thereof with a cam-shaped projection 14, which is adapted to bear a ainst the inner side of the handle end of t 1e movable-jaw shank, whereby when the handles 6 and 13 are gripped the shank of the movable jaw will be forced outwardly into engagement with the pawl or dog 9, thereby holding said movable jaw in its adjusted position.
In using the wrench the stationary aw is engaged with the nut or other device, after which the movable aw and shank are slipped outwardly into engagement with said nut, and after being so engaged the handle 6 of said movable jaw and the pivoted handle 13 are gripped, which will cause the teeth on the outer side of the sliding-j aw shank to engage the teeth on the inner side of the pawl or dog, thus holdino said movable jaw in lirm engagement with the nut. When it is desired to readjust the movable jaw, the pivoted handle 13 is released, so that the cam 14 thereon will be disengaged from the movablejaw shank, thus allowin the same to be disengaged from the teet i of the pawl or dog 9, after which the shank may be slipped backward or forward in the bail-shaped guide 12, thereby moving the jaw 4 to the desired position. j
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is Y 1. In a wrench, the combination with the stationary jaw and shank, of a movable jaw and shank, handles arranged on said Shanks,
IOC
a locking-dog 9 pivoted on said stationaryjaw shank, and means operated by the gripping of the wrench-handles to engage the shank of said movable jaw with said locking device, thereby holding said movable aw in its adjusted position, substantially as described.
2. In a wrench, the combination with -a stationary j aw and shank, of a movable j aw and shank, said movable-jaw shank having formed therein a longitudinally-disposed slot, a lockingv pawl or dog pivotally mounted in said stationary-jaw shank and adapted to project through the slot in said movable-j aw shank, handles arranged on the inner ends of said jaw-Shanks, and means operated by the gripping of said handles to engage said movable-jaw shank with said locking pawl or do substantially as described.
3. 'n a wrench, the combination with a stationary jaw and shank, of a movable jaw and shank, said movable-j aw shank having formed therein a longitudinally-disposed slot, a locking pawl or dog pivotally mounted in said stationary-jaw shank and adapted to project through the slot in said movable-j aw shank, a guide arranged on the inner end of said stationary-jaw shank, a rigid handle Jformed on said movable shank, a movable handle pivoted in said guide, and means whereby the gripping of said handles will engage said movable-j aw shank with said locking pawl or dog, substantially as described,
4. In a wrench, the combination with a stationary aw and shank, of a movable jaw and shank, said movable-jaw shank having formed therein a longitudinally-disposed slot, teeth or serrations formed on the outer side of said shank, a post pivotally mounted in said stationary-jaw shank, andadapted to project through the slot in said movable-jaw shank, a pawl or dog arranged on the projectin end of said post, teeth formed on the inner si e of said pawl to engage the teeth on said movable-j aw shank, a bail-shaped guide arranged on the inner end of said stationaryjaw shank, a rigid handle formed on said movable-j aw shank, a movable handle pivotally mounted 'in said bail-shaped guide and a cam formed on said movable handle toengage said movable-j aw shank whereby when said handles are gripped said movable-jaw shank will be engaged with said loeking-pawl, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY R. SMITH.
