-This invention relates to a can-.seeming machine, and is particularly adapted for use in the production of double-seemed cans of angular, curved, or irregular shapes.

The lever P is automatically retracted by meansof the spring P5, extending therefrom to the standard. .After the raising operation is performed there is a continued movement of the lever P permitted for the purpose of tripping the clutch-pin and starting the operatinglshaft for the controlling-cam. Referring to l xo Fig. 21, the position indicated at l is with the parts at rest, at which time the. seeming-head is continuously rotated in the usual manner. When the lever is brought to the position indicated at 2, the tableis elevated to bring the can into the seeming-head, While a continued movement tothe position shown at 3 trips the 'clutch to operate the controlling-cam, which is rotated at a much slower speed. than the seaming-head and makes only a single revolution during the time required for t e several seeming-rollers to consecutively operate u on the can to be seamed.
It is )puelieved that the operation of the different features of construction will be clearly" understood from the foregoing description, and it need only be added that in the use of the machine the can is placed upon its table 'and 'the shaft therefor raised by the controlling-lever to bring the can into the seaming-- 3o head and against the stop at that point.
This movement does not start the controlling-cam, and the can can be lowered again if found necessary `as a'continued movement ofthe lever inthe same direction is required to trip the finger controlling the clutch-pin, so as-to permit that pinto seat in the continuously-rotated gear loosely mounted upon the same shaft. When this gear is clutched, it rotates the shaft and the controlling-cam secured thereto, While the configuration of this cam determines the successive downward movementof the cam-fingers, 'by which each of the seaming-rollers is consecutively placed in operative position relative to the can and after this operation allowed to retract therefrom, This action continues until the cam-flange at the tripping-finger has completed arevolution,when the clutch-pin is automaticall withdrawn, thus stopping the rotation o the controlling-cam in proper' qosition to permit the elevation of the cam-hngers by means of the Weight or other retracting means connected to the tripping-lever, by which the fingers are reciprocated. lt will be observed that the operation of these fingers is independent of the continuous rotation of the head, while the rollers not operative until the fingers are thrown into proper position by the controlling-cam.
