. avin secured thereon a hardened plate L3, provi ed with a series ot recesses L2, extending therethrough and into the hubL. These recesses are adapted-to receive the clutchinLt, .mounted to recpipcate within the j ub M, secured to the shaft J. This pin is provided With a head L5 and with a guideu stern L, extending through a suitable recess l .inthe hub vand parallel to the pin Ll for the' 'pu1pos`e of guiding the same and preventing` j any rotation'thereof.. The clutchpin is nor- `xliialiyheld in one of the sockets in the hub 6o TL. by means of a tension-spring L7, mounted l upon a face of the hub M in any desired mannerefor instance, by the screws Ls-and bearing at its free end upon head L5 of the clutch-head. The inner face `ot this pin is 6 5 tapered or beveled, as shown at L", to coop-V era-te With the beveled tace N oi the clutch- `finger N. This linger is mounted. in a bracket Nz'by means of apivot N3 and the beveled end thereof' rnormally forced toward the shaft J by means of a tension-spring N4, 7 0 secured at one end to the bracket and bearing at its opposite end against the lower por tion of the clutch-finger N.
During the operation oi' seeming a can the gear L and the members carried by the shaft J make one revolution, and for the purpose of controlling this motion and for automatically releasing the controlling-cam a trip-levor O is 'provided and comprises substantially a bell-crank lever having one end -,O 8o' thereof provided with a pivotally-mounted irietion-roller02 and the opposite end G3 connected, by means of a link or rod O4, with the controlling-lever ot the machine, to be hereinafter described. Depending from this bell- 8 5 cranlt lever is an arm O5, provided with a laterallyextenzling pin O6, which in the moven nient of the lever in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. v18 contacts With the iovier end ot the tripe'linger N', withdrawing 9o it r'rom the clutch-pin, which is forced. by the tension-spring upon the head thereoiC into clutching contact with the hub of the continuously -.f.l.riven gear L, thus imparting movement to the shaft J" and to the controlling-cam d, carried thereby. In this motion ci: the cranlclever the friction-roller is raised to ride upon the cam-flange M, carried by the'hub M and holds, the parts in this position until a complete rotation ismade, When `ico the recessedportieri M2 or" the ilange permits the parts to beretractcd to the position shown in Fig. 18, when the finger N is disposed in the path of the head L5 and automatically passes behind the same to Withdraw the pin from the hub of the driven gear L, thus disconnecting the shaft J from its driving means.
The controlling-lever for the parts just ldescribed is shown at P in Figs. 1 and 2l and is connected with the link or rod O4 by means no of a bell-crank lever O7, mounted upon a fixed part and connected by a link O8 With the con-- trolling-lever at the pivot P, which is iisposedabove the pivot?2 for said lever. The latter pivot is mounted in a depending bracket r I 5 P3, carried by the arm A5, which forms one of the bearings for the shaft Q of the can-table Q. This shaft is provided at its lower portion with a collar secured thereon by any suitable nieansfiior'instance, a set-screw Q3 1 2 o and is provided at opposite sides with pivots Q, by which it is connected With the outer end or' a lever Q5, pivotally mounted at its inner end Q to the standard A. This lever is provided intermediate of its ends vvith a pin or lug Q7, adapted to engage a cam-lever P4,
carried by the controllmgdever P,'Which. in
its movement carries the pin Q7 and the legver upon which it is mounted from the fullline position shown in Fig. 2l to that shown 13o in dotted lines, thus bringing the can into firm contact with the seamng-head. The lever P is automatically retracted by meansof the spring P5, extending therefrom to the standard. .After the raising operation is performed there is a continued movement of the lever P permitted for the purpose of tripping the clutch-pin and starting the operatinglshaft for the controlling-cam. Referring to l xo Fig. 21, the position indicated at l is with the parts at rest, at which time the. seeming-head is continuously rotated in the usual manner. When the lever is brought to the position indicated at 2, the tableis elevated to bring the can into the seeming-head, While a continued movement tothe position shown at 3 trips the 'clutch to operate the controlling-cam, which is rotated at a much slower speed. than the seaming-head and makes only a single revolution during the time required for t e several seeming-rollers to consecutively operate u on the can to be seamed.
It is )puelieved that the operation of the different features of construction will be clearly" understood from the foregoing description, and it need only be added that in the use of the machine the can is placed upon its table 'and 'the shaft therefor raised by the controlling-lever to bring the can into the seaming-- 3o head and against the stop at that point.
This movement does not start the controlling-cam, and the can can be lowered again if found necessary `as a'continued movement ofthe lever inthe same direction is required to trip the finger controlling the clutch-pin, so as-to permit that pinto seat in the continuously-rotated gear loosely mounted upon the same shaft. When this gear is clutched, it rotates the shaft and the controlling-cam secured thereto, While the configuration of this cam determines the successive downward movementof the cam-fingers, 'by which each of the seaming-rollers is consecutively placed in operative position relative to the can and after this operation allowed to retract therefrom, This action continues until the cam-flange at the tripping-finger has completed arevolution, when the clutch-pin is automaticall withdrawn, thus stopping the rotation o the controlling-cam in proper' qosition to permit the elevation of the cam-hngers by means of the Weight or other retracting means connected to the tripping-lever, by which the fingers are reciprocated. lt will be observed that the operation of these fingers is independent of the continuous rotation of the head, while the rollers not operative until the fingers are thrown into proper position by the controlling-cam. The pattern-cam, held -in fixed position within the head, is capable of removal or re )lacement, as found necessary, and controls the reciprocatory motion of the carriers for the seamin, -rollers, so that any desired-configu- 65 ration of can may be seamed simply by other parts in canine changing]r this pattern-cam ywithin the seam'- ing-hea it isfonly necessaryto operate bellcrank leverA upon the peri hery ofthe cam-flange, which will hold t e lever andV o erative osition during the rotation of thisfllange, and when the recessed portion 4of the flange is reached the lever is automatically restored to its inward position by means of the retrectin ,-spring extending from the lever to the stan ard. v
it will be obvious that changes may be made in the details of construction andconfiguration such as would be sug ested by the foregoing disclosure to those s illed in this art Withoutdepartingfrom the spiritof vthe. invention as defined by the appended claims,
