SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,398, dated December 23, 1890.
Application filed August 28, 1890. Serial No. 363,287.` (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER MALM, a citizen of the United States, residing at new York, in the county and State of New York, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in paper-cutters; and the invention consists in the details of construction set forth in the following specication and claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a face elevation of a paper-cutter containing lthe invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section along Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a section along 1/ y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section along .e e', Fig. 3. Fig. (l is a section along o c, Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the letter A indicates a support or frame, having a table B for the paper O, as also a clamping-bar D and cutter or blade E to clamp and cut the paper.
F is the cutter-head.
The construction and operation of these parts are well known and need no detailed description.
The driving-shaft G has the usual fast and loose pulleys H I-I and a fly-wheel I. Said shaft G gives motion to the driving-gearconiposed of the two pinion parts or wheels K L. The actuatinggear M moves the cutter E to its work, and the returning-gear N returns the cutter to the starting-point. The gear M is engaged by the pinion K and the gear N by the pinion L. The gears M N are each shown in the form of mutilated or segment-al gears mounted on the shaft O, and they have crankpins P, connected by links Q to the cutter. The pinion parts K L are of different sizes, as
are also the gears M N, so that the cutter is moved to the work slowly and with considerable force, and when the work is finished the cutter is returned rapidly to its starting-point. The pinion L has twice the number of teeth of the pinion K. The teeth of the pinions K L are so situated (see Fig. 6) that the radii or radial planes drawn from the center of the pinion K through two adjacent teeth in said pinion will pass through two teeth of pinion tween said two teeth of pinion L.
In Fig. 3 the parts are indicated in the position occupied when the knife is about to move toward the work. The actuating-gear M, moving in the indicated direction, is en- 5 5 gaged by the pinion part K, and as the diameter of gear M is large and that of pinion part K small the shaft G has considerable leverage, so that it can move the knife to the work with y considerable force. When the gear M has 6o passed the pinion part K, the returning-gear N is engaged by the pinion part L, and by reason of the reduced diameter of gear N and of the increased diameter of pinion part L the knife is returned rapidly to its startingpoint without the shaft G having to alter its speed. The gears M N carrya stud or inclined projection R, which, when the cutter has re` turned to the starting-point, strikes the inger S, Fig. 1, connected to the lever TU fulcrumed 7o at V. Said lever actuates t-he clutch IV, which connects the shaft G and driving-pinion KL. When the stud R strikes the inger S, the clutch-actuating lever is moved, so as to throw the clutch out of action and stop the machine when the cutter has reached the starting-point. The lever T U carries a set-screw X, which can be so adjusted that when the lever T U is moved to release the clutch the screw X presses upon a brake or strap Y, so as to 8o tighten said brake about the driving-pinion K L and promptly stop the machine. Fig. 4 shows the pinion K L provided with a suitable drum engaged bythe brake-band Y. A handlever a Z, fulcrurned at l), is connected to the clutch-lever T U, and said hand-lever can be used to move the clutch-actuating lever, so as to bring the clutch into its engaging position when the machine is to be started. Then the clutch is in its released position, the arm a of 9o lever a Z is engaged by spring c, so that the clutch is locked against accidental engagement.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a paper-cutting machine, the combination, with the cutter or blade, of a drivingshaft, an actuating-gear, and a returning-gear L, leaving an intermediate tooth locatedrbe- 5o connected with the critter or blade, a pair of pnions arranged 011 the drivin g-shaft and oonneoted to rotate in unison, and a clutch serving to connect both pinions with the shaft for sinmltaneonsly rotating such pinions, substantially as described.
2. In a papercutting machine, the co1nbination, with the cutter or blade, of a segmental or mutilated actuating-gear and a segmental or mutilated returning-gear, and driving-pinions K L, made to engage the actuating and returning gears, substantially as described.
3. In a paper-cutting machine, the combination, with the cutter or blade, of an actuating and a returning gear for said blade, driving-pinions for the actuating and returning gears, a driving-shaft, a clutch made to connect the driving-shaftand driving-pinions, an actuating-lever vfor the clutch, and a stud or projection carried by the actuating and returning gears for moving the lever and clutch to the releasing position, substantially as described.
4. In a paper-cutting machine, the combination, with the cutter or blade, oi' an actuating anda returning gear for said blade,driving-pinions for the actuating and returning gears, a driving-shaft, a clutch made to con neet the driving-shaft and driving-pinions, an actuatinglever for the clutch, a brake connected to the actuating-lever, and a stud or projection carried by the actuating and rcturning gears for moving the lever and clutch to the releasing position and for tightening the brake, substantially as described.
