To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DEWEY C. OANFIELD, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Canaan, in the. county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved. Sheet-Metal Press, 'of
which the following is a full, .clear, and
exact description. g
This invention relates to -a sheet metal press, and aims more particularly to provide a press adapted to form.the ends of sheet metal drums, cans and receptacles in general,
, and for properly crimping the same.
It is well known that various machines have been devised with a view ofprovidlng a press particularly adapted for use in conan expanding die is .used for crimping or forming the end portions of the same. It has furtherbeen proposed to .utilize a contracting die for the same purpose.
. Machines of this typei have left much to be desired inthat certain specific construc- .tions have been employed. for holding the receptacles in place during the forming operation.

Without employing either manually or mechanically that .the receptacles have not been properly 'held, resulting in a great waste of material delay has been. experienced. Where mechanicallyloperated means has been utilized operated retaining members in conjunction witha machine of this nature and relying solely upon gravity or the hands of the operator to hold the receptacle properly in position many defective articles have been produced. It is now to be noted that the die formed bythe plurality of members 7 presents in its 7 proiected position, indicated in dotted lines in 1g. 2, an uninterrupted ring shaped working face.

To now providesuitable operating and timing mechanism serving to actuate the dies, I utilize .in the embodiment shown a slidable shaft 15 projecting through the openingpresented in the second die, formed .by the wedge-shaped members 9, it being clearly shown in Fig. 2, and is adapted to upon the die being properly assembled. En-
7 conveniently terminate in a pair of ears 17 between which extends a pin 18 serving to afford pivotal connection between these die members and levers l9 pivotally secured subsequently intermediate their extremities to the table 6 as has been indicated bythe reference numeral 20. The pivotal connection as has been clearly shown between the die members 7 and the levers 19 is provided by the upper ends of such levers extending between the ears 17 adjacent which end these levers are formed with a transversely disposedoblong slot such as 21 through which slot the pin 18 extends.
A collar 22 is slidably keyed as at 23 upon the shaft 15, and this collar conveniently includes an annular groove or depression 24: into which extend the inner ends of connect ingrods 25 the outer ends of which are pivotally secured as at 26 to the lower ends of p the levers 19. p n
It will now be appreciated, that uponthe collar 22 being moved longitudinally of the shaft 15 that the inner ends of the connecting rods 25 will be moved accordingly, the outervends being projected outwardly, which action will be transmitted to the levers 19 I serving to project the radially disposed dies 7 inwardly to the position indicated in dotted lines in'Fig. 2. Furtherua movement bodily on the part of the shaft 15 will result in the wedge-shaped members9 being projected outwardly to a position in which their working faces 10 are capable ofcooperating with the working faces 8 of the diemember'f. w
With a view of accomplishing this result,
and to properly time the same, a shaft 27 suitably mounted in bearings 28 upon the supporting legs 5 is provided, which shaft receives its power from anysuitable means such as a belt pulley 29 secured adj acent one.

A third shaft 33 swingingly mounts a plurality of arms 84 which extend in pairs to each side of the shaft 15, and at a point below the collar 22. The opposite ends of the arms 34 extend to a point above the shaft-32 which carries a plurality of fixed cams 35- corresponding in number to the arms 34 and lying directly below the free ends of the same.
f It is now to be: noted that the collar 22 Y j is conveniently provided with a pairof lugs 36 extending outwardly therefrom at diametrically opposite points, and overlying the outermost arms 34. It will be seen that upon the shaft 27 being rotated, and trans- ;mitting rotation to the shaft 32'that the cams carried by such shaft will serve to properly engage the innermost pair of arms 34;, which engage with the-pin 37extending transversely through the shaft 15, and that upon a further rotation of the shaft 32, and
consequential raisingof the-inner arms 34 of the receptacle,and upon a further rotation of the shaft 32 the outermost pair of.
arms 34 will be swung upwardly, and these arms uponengaging the lugs 36 of the collar 22 will serve to raise this member resulting in an inward projection of the outer set of dies thus forming. the upper endof the receptacle.
' Havingthus fully described my invention what I desire to secureby Letters Patent is:
1. A press,-including a table, a shaft extending through said table and presenting a beveled surface adjacent its point of penetration of the same, a die memberrincluding a plurality ofwedge-shaped members slidably positioned. upon said table, and-having their inner ends bearing against said shaft,
and being formed with an inclined surface adapted 'to cooperate with. said:beveled surface, a second die member including aplurality of, radially disposed members 'slidably positioned upon said table, levers pivotally mounted upon 'saidtable andbeing pivotally secured adjacent their upperfends to said radially disposed die members, connecting rods pivotally secured adjacent the lower ends of said levers, a slidable collar encircling said shaft, means tending to normally hold the first named die members in contracted position, lugs forming a part ofsaid collar, a second shaft, cams mounted upon said second shaft, arms swinging'ly secured and having-theirfre'e ends engagedby said cams, a, transversely extendingpin through thefirst named shaft, means foroperating said cams, whereby to swing said arms to move said collar and operate the last named die member, and also to engage said first named shaft-pin to expand the first named die member. n V

A press, including a table formed with radially disposed slots,a die mounted upon said table, said dieincluding a plurality of wedge sliapedmembers, means adapted to cooperate with said members a shoulder formed upon each of the upper faces of said wedge-shaped members, and presentingin aggregate an annular flange, aspring encircling said flange for normally holding said members in contracted position, means for guiding the same upon said table, said means including a plurality of headed lugs projecting through the radially disposed slots in said table.
3. A press, including a table, a die positioned upon said table, a shaft extending through said table centrally of said die member, a second die member including a plurality of radially disposed members slidably positioned upon said table, levers pivotally secured to said table and being pivotally secured adjacent their upper ends to said radially disposed die members, connecting rods pivotally secured adjacent the lower end of said levers, a slidable collar encircling said shaft, an annular groove formed in said collar adapted to receive the free ends of said connecting rods, a second shaft, cams mounted upon said second shaft, and arms having their free ends engaged by said cams, whereby to swing said arms to move said collar and operate the last named die member.
