Be it known that I, FRANKLIN R. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have made and. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in fasteners, and more particularly to the socket member of a ball-and-socket fastener, such as are generally used upon gloves, suspenders, &c., the object of the same being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and cheap to manufacture, easily and readily applied to the fabric or material, and which from its formation shall be sufliciently resilient to receive and retain the solid stud member when the two members are forced or locked together.

With these and other ends in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view 01' the cap-piece and fastening-eyelet prior to being assembled. Fig. 2 is a view of the cap-piece and eyelet after being assembled. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the stud-catch. Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof.

Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the cap-piece preferably consists of two parts-namely, the cap A and collet B-their outer edges being flanged and locked together, said collet being provided with a cen tral opening 0 for the entrance of the fastening-eyelet C. This eyelet is preferably closed at its top or upper end, as shown at 0, its closed end being bent downwardly and inwardly prior to being assembled with the cappiece. The lower end of the shank c of the eyelet is flanged outwardly, as shown at 0 whereby to clamp the cloth between the same and the collet B, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Against the lower side of the flange c rests the stud catch or disk D, the outer edge of the latter being flanged over and upon the outer edge of the flange c of the eyelet to fasten or look the parts together. This studcatch D is provided with a central opening d, the edge of which is serrated or formed into a plurality of teeth d bent upwardly into the opening in the neck of the eyelet C, whereby a restricted opening or passage for the stud member is formed by a plurality of spring arms or teeth adapted to receive and retain said stud member, which latter may be constructed or formed in the ordinary way.

In assembling the parts the shank of the eyelet having the stud-catch secured to the flange thereof is passed through an opening in the cloth or fabric E, through the central opening 0 in the collet B, andinto the cappiece, to which it is locked by forcing upwardly the inturned end 0, the result being that the closed end of the eyelet is bulged or flared outwardly and over and upon the edge of the opening in the collet, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the cloth or fabric E being securely clamped between said collet and the eyeletflange 0 The resiliency of the stud-catch will of course largely depend upon the thickness of the metal from which it is formed and also upon the size and number of the spring teeth or arms (i the greater the number of teeth the greater the resiliency or elasticity.

The device is exceedingly simple in construction, consists of but few parts, cheap to manufacture, and which may be easily and readily assembled.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

An improved socket member of a ball-andsocket fastener, said socket member consisting of a cap-piece and collet locked together said collet having a central opening, and an eyelet consisting of two members, one 01 said eyelet members having a hollow shank and base-flange and the other eyelet member being of disk form having its edge flanged over the base-flange of the shank, and having a central opening whose edge is radially slotted to form a series of spring-arms with upwardlyturned points entering but out of contact with the inner wall of the hollow shank, said shank having a closed head which, after insertion into the collet-opening, is upset and bulged or flared outwardly and over and upon the edge of said collet-opening, all constructed and arranged to operate, as herein described.
