' Beit known that I, CLARENCE E. METOALF, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Ring Spinnin or Twisting Apparatus, of which the folfowing descri tion, in connection with the accompanying rawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention'has for its object the production of novels inning or twisting apparatus of the so-calle rotary-ring type, whereby the motion of the ring and its control when running at speed is made more uniform c and smoother.
My invention also comprehends means for securing the ring-casing to the ring-rail in such a manner that no distortion or deviation thereof1 can takeplace.
The various novel features of my invention will be fully described inthe subjoined specification and particularly pointed out in the following claims.
Figure 1 is aview in front elevation of spinning or twisting apparatus embodying m invention7 the ring-rail and the holder for the casing being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section of the rotaryring and casing, showing the construction of the parts not visible in Fig. 1,' and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the holder detached.
I have herein shown the ring 1 of the double-flanged type, having its upper flange 2 forming a raceway for the traveler 3, Figs. l and 2, and its lower flange 4 is herein shown as adapted to lit tightly in a socket 5 in the ring-carrier. The latter is thus detachable from the ring; but so far as my invention 1s concerned the ring and carrier may be made integral, if desired, and such construction I consider fully within the scope of my invention.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 2, the ring-carrier comprises an annular externallybeveled or inverted frusto-conical bearing 6, having depending from its lower smaller end athin sleeve 7. Int-o this sleeve a metallic collar 8, having at its lower end an external lateral flange 9, is adapted to be forced in assembling the parts, so that the sleeve or collar rotates asa single piece with the ring 1,
the Harige forming a downhold device, as will be described. The casing for the ring is an annular member 10, having an internal circular socket 11 at its upper end to tightly receive a non-metallic seat 12 for the bearing, said seat being preferably made of wood impregnated with wax or grease to reduce the friction to a minimum.
The seat is preferably made transversely convex, as shown in Fig. 2, to contact tangentially with the bearing and is concentric thereto, the lifting or axial movement of the ring raising the bearing more or less from the seat and permitting some radial or slow slight lifting movement of the ring to adapt itself to the pull of the yarn when in operation. Below the seat the casing is made conical internally, as at 13, and within the space between such conical face and the outer surface of the sleeve 7 I interpose a lower member or ring 14, preferably of wood treated as is the seat to reduce friction. Said ring 14 rests upon the flange 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and its outer wall is beveled or coned at 15 to correspond to the interior of the casing, the ring 14 being inserted in the casing, and then the collar 8 isforced into position within the sleeve 7 when the parts are assembled. The loose member or ring 14 coperates with the flange 9 to limit upward axial movement of the rotary ring 1 and the parts movable therewith, the upward movement of the member 14 being limited by the casing. As the member 14 is loosely conned within the casing, it can rotate with the ring 1, and italso has some radial movement, as shown in Fig. 2, the clearances therein being somewhat exaggerated to more clearly show the structure. This loose annularl member 14 serves to balance the rotary ring and to give it a smoother and more uniform motion when running' at speed, and it also serves as a cushion for radial movements of the ring.
Referring to Figs. land 2, the casing is provided at its top With an external flange 16, which rests on the top of the ring-rail R, Fig. 1, the body of the casing passing through the hole R inthe rail, and the periphery of the flange is beveled at 17. I retain the casing securely in position by a holder, (shown separately in Fig. 3,) consisting of a flat plate 18, having a circular opening 19, beveled at 20,

to iit the-peripheral bevel of the flange 16, the holder being secured to the ring-rail by suitable screws. 21, Fig. l.
By the construction shown a continuous annular retaining engagement is eiiected between the holder and the casing, this being an important feature of my invention, as thereby there is no chance of distorting or varying the true circular structure of the casing. If such distortion takes place, even to a very slight degree, the smooth and uniform running of the ring is interfered with, and its effectiveness iscorrespondingly diminished.
My invention is not restricted tothe precise construction and arrangement herein shown and described, as the same may be modified or varied by those skilled the art' without departingA from` the spirit and scope of this invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire tol secure by Letters Patent, is-
1.. The combination, with a rotary ring having a beveled bearing,y ot a fixed casing.I having a. seat for said bearing, and means to' limit upward axial movement of the ring, comprising a loose member confined. within the casing below the seat, anda ceperating member'rotatable with the ring.
2. The combination, with a rotary ring4 having a beveled bearing, of a xed casing' having a nonmetallic seat forsaid bearing, and means to limit upward axial movement of the ring, comprising a loose member coniined within the casing below the seat, andyk a coperating member rotatable with the ring.y
3. The combination, with a rotary ring having a beveled bearing, ofy a fixed casing having a non-metallic, transversely convex seat for said bearing, and means to limit upward axial movement of the ring, comprisingl a loose member confined' within thecasing below the seat, and a coperating'member rotatable with. the ring;
4. rlhe combination, withA a rotary ring, having a beveled* bearing, of a fixed casing having a seat for said bearing', and means to limit upward axial movement of the ring, comprising a loose nonmetallic member confined within the casing below the seat,l and a coperating metallic member rotatable with thering.
5. The combination, with a rotary ring havinga beveled. bearing, of a iixedy casing having a seat for said bearing, and means to limit upward axial movement of the ring, comprising a loose wooden ring confined within the casing below the seat, and a coperating annular member depending from the bearing and having an outturned lip to project beneath said wooden ring.

The combination, with a rotary ring having an attached beveled. bearing, and a downholdl device depending from the latter,` of a iixed casing having an annular' seat for and concentric with the bearing, said"x casing being: internally conical below the seat, and a non-metallic rin i having a conical outer face interposed looseiy between the conical portion of the casing and thedownhold device to cooperate therewith and limit upward axial movement of the rotary ring.-
8. Thel combination, with. a rotary ring' having a travelereraceway, of a ring-carrier f connected: with the ring and having an-annular, beveled bearing. a downhold device de pending from the bearing, a fixed casing having a seat for andi concentricwiththe bearing, and a loose non-metallic ring: interposed bettween the downhold device andl the casing and limited by the latterin its axial and radia-l movement, the said non-metallic ringv cooperating with the downholdy device to limit the lifting ofthe ring-carrier'.
9. The combination, with arotary ringgof a fixed casing thereforpermitting limited axial and radial movement of the ring and' a holder to'secure the casing'to the ring-raiLtheholder having a continuous annular retainingy en'- gagement with. the casing.
