Description

PATENTED MAY 15, 1906.
J. W. LANHAM.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED DEO.27.1904.
side thereof and prefera UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
na saopsi.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented May 15, 1906.
Application filed December 27, 1904. Serial No. 238,457.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. LANHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to wrenches, and especially to that class of wrenches rovided with means for varying the size of t e workreceivin opemng.
The j ect of my invention is to provide a wrench which may be cheaply manufactured and which will exert upon the work a high degree of clamping pressure.
A further ob ect of my invention is to pro-. vide a wrench having a traveling outer aw, with means for securing the said jaw at a desired adjustment relatively to the handle and to permit an angular movement of the jaw when so adjusted.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter morefully described, shown in the accompanyin drawings, and articularly pointed out in the appended c aim, it being understood that changes inthe form, pro ortion, size, and minor details ma be ma e within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figurel is a view in side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a side view of my wrench in vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the yoke member of my improved wrench. Fig. 4.- is a pers ective view of the pawl, operatinglever, an spring of my wrench.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In its preferred embodiment my improved wrench consists of a rigid handle member 1, conveniently formed and proportioned to be graspedby the operator and provided at its inner end with a work-engaging face 2. In practice it is found convenient to form the work-engaging face 2 integral with a block 3, set into a groove in the end of the handle member 1 and secured therein by a rivet or' screw 4. The handle member 1 is also provided with upstanding Iguides 5 u on each, ly forme integral therewith and between which is formed an openings) in .the handle member 1.
A yo e 7 is mounted u on and embraces the handle member 1 and 1s pivotally secured thereon by a screw or rivet 8, passing through holes 9. The yoke 7 is so proportione and disposed that an angular movement thereof causes the said yoke. to abut against the guides 5, and the movement thereof is thereby limited. A jaw member 10 is mounted within the yoke 7 and provided at its upper edge with teeth 11. The jaw member 10 is also provided with a workengaging face 12,- disposed opposite and adapted to operate in conjunction with the wor -en agin face 2. A lever 13 is pivoted within t e yo e 7 by rivet 14 and has piv otally secured thereto a pawl 15, provided with teeth 16, adapted to engage with the teeth 11 of the jaw member 10 and to hold the said jaw member at any desired adjustmentrelatively to the yoke 7. A s ring 17 is provided, adapted to cause the paw to automatically engage with the jaw member 10. Within the hole 6 is disposed a spring-pressed bearinglug 18, adapted to bear against an outward y-extending leaf 19 of the yoke 7.
- The operation of my improved wrench is 1 as follows: With the parts assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, the jaw 10 may be given a desired adjustment by a ressure upon lever 13, raising the teeth 16 o the pawl 15 out of en a ement with the teeth 1 1 and permitting a si ing movement of the jaw member outwardly. Pressure upon the lever 13 also presses the yoke 7 out of engagement with upstanding guides 5, thereby opening the work-engaging jaws of the wrench to the maximum extent for a given adjustment.
When the desired adjustment is attained, the lever 13 bein released ,the awl 15 is automatically cause to engage with the teeth 11 by the s ring 17. The aw may be moved inward y without depressing the lever 13, as the sloping sides of the teeth 16 will ride up the sloping sides of the teeth 11 against the pressureof the spring 17. The desired adustment having been attained and the jaw member locked in o'sition, the work is engaged between the wor -engaging faces 2 and 12 and the said work grasped firmly therein by the pressure of the spring-pressed plug 18,
bearmg against the leaf 19 of the yoke. It
is obvious that a working pressure exerted 5 sure upon the Work.
upon the handle member 1 in the direction indicated by the arrow will cause a still greater angular displacement of the yoke 7 and jaw membe'rlO and astill greater pres- It is obvious that plane 'work-engagin faces may be substituted for the serrate faces 2 and 12 and that other minor changes may be made without departing from the 10 spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as novel, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The-combination in a wrench of a handle I 5 member and a j aw at its end, a yoke pivoted on said member provided with a transverse plate, a sprin pressed pawl between said late and the andle member; asecond jaw oca'ted in the. oke and provided with teeth at its outer 'si e, a s'pri'n'gressed lever ivoted in the yoke, a pivote' pawl on sai lever to engage said teeth, and guiding-1ugs for "the second member, formed on the handle member; v v
V In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses;
