Description

@uitrit jsirn't n@ffice 'JOHN A. weon, or HAGERSTOWN, MARXLAND.
Lette/ra Patent'Na. 82,056, dated September 8, 1858.
. v -HV- IMPROVED BXERGISING-GHAIR.
TO ALLWHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Bc it known that I, JOHN A. WRoE, of Hagerstown, county of Washington, and State of ll/Iaryland, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Yibratory and Exercising-Chairs for persons-leading sedentary lives, invalida, ttc.; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of .the same, reference being had to thev accompanying drawings, endl-the letters of reference markedV thereon,makin part vof this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a'side elevation. Figure 2 isa. front eleva-tion. 1 Figure 8 is a Vertical section.' Figure 4 is a rear-view of the back. The nature of my'hinvention consists in the construction of chairs for invalids, so that the baok,seat, arms, and foot-board shall be hollow, vibratory in principle, and made of any suitable material, or in any convenient form, the chair proper to rest upon pivots or rockers, so as to move to and fro, and made to vibrate by means of spiral springs, disks, or their equivalents, and so arranged in the chair that when aetedon by springlever,.
pendulum, or battery, the chair is made t'o vibrate. To the arms and foot-board are fixed helices, dependent upon or independent'oi' eaclziother.l Into the helices the arms and legs are to be inserted. The -helices are to be connected with a galvanic battery, and operated on all together or separately, as the case may require.
` When the chair is vibratedby the jar of spiral springs, disks, Sncf, the galvanic battery being in connection Y.
with one or more of the helices, the magnetic current is communicated to the-part or several parteci' theplticnt in a state of vibration, who may occupy the chair-,in a sitting'posture, the arms ahdlegs being-inscrtedin the helices andthe back resting against thevibratory board. A patient seated on this chair in a state of vibration,
and underthe infinence of any remedial agent, will find that it will greatly facilitate the,aotion of such agent iu the removal of disease. The patient will also receive the greatest amount of benefit from the magnetic current assisted by the vibrstory motion. y y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I willnow proceed to describe its construction and operation. V l
In the drawings,`A is the `arm-chn.iroi` usual form; B, the' pivot, on which theupper moves up'cn thebottom part C D D, the helicesfor the arms; E E, the helicesfor the legs. .'F is a disk, )having connectedJvith it a main-spring, f, with a hammer, fl, which strikes against it. is a rod, having its upper end looped, which'loop slides upon a screw in the centre of the disk. The lower end of the rod Gr resta on a ledge, g, iu the lower part of' the chai-r. H is aspx-ing, which rests upon the rod G and keeps it down. h is a Spring-pawl, which w rks into s. single ratchet, kl, which is under the spring f2, which operates upon the hammer f1.
When-the upper chair is moved backward, it is supported by small springs, K, at the corners, and when the j chair is down a suiiicient distance, the rod G has been forced upward, so that the pawl la c arries up the ratchet tuntil it passes the point of thefpawl, and by the spring h2 is made to recoil, and the hammerf strikes the main-spring and thus causes a suddenjar, which affects the back-board, against which the head of the patient is reclining, and this takes place as often as the chair is rockedbackward, and asiscon 'as the chair goes forward the spring H forces the rod down to its place on the ledge g.- A l These spring-striking clocks can be put in the sides, i'oot-boards, and bottom, and operated upon in a similar manner; ,and I do not confine myself to the back of a chair in this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A vibratory and exercising-chair, when the same isA constructed wit'hfhollow back, seat, arms, and foot board, and is so supported upon pivpts or rocker'sthat the chair'can be readily operated by means of springs,
or their equivalents, substantially as described, as and for .the'purpose specified.
'In testimony whereof, I havesigned my name to this specication in the presence oi'gtwo subscribing witnesses.
