PEBBLE MILL; APPLICATION/FILED JUNE 26, 1905.
WITNESSES /1VI 'ENTOR. gay: '5. mz/f BY M. ew/02W I ATTORNEY ra rnnr orr es.
.PEBBLE MELL Specification of Lettersllatent.
Patented May 15,1906.
Application filed June 26, 1905. Serial No. 266371- To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Gnonon S. EMERIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 125 Osborne street, Nissahickon, Philadelphia, in the coun y of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pebble-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the class of mills for reducing, comminuting, or grinding, known as ball, tube, or pebble mills, wherein the substance to be reduced is fed into a rotating cylinder containing pebbles and subjected to the grinding action of the pebbles, caused by-the rotation of the mill.
My improvement in this class of mills consists in a novel form of head located at the inlet or feed end of said mill, whereby an ample and rapid feed of material into the body of the mill may be secured, while at the same time the egress oi the pebbles into the feed-trunnion and teed-worm is effectually prevented. This result I accomplish by the means shown and described in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a view in vertical section of a ball or pebble mill furnished with my improved head. In the figure, A is the drum or cylindrical body of the mill, adapted to be rotated horizontally either by means of the guides or rails B upon the circumference oi" said drum A in conjunction with the Wheels C, actuated by any suitable mechanism or by means of its trunnions D and D in the well lrnown manner.
The admission of the material to be com- Ininuted or ground is effected by means of the pipe or worm-casin E and the wori'n F, actuated by its pulley The material carried by said worm is discharged through. the opening H in the end of the worm-casing into the cone-shaped interior of the feed trunnion D. i From the feed-trnnnion D the material passes into the body A of the mill through the head I, I, I", and l. The construction of this head is as follows: The part i is a disk. The parts I, l, and 1 are rings disposed arallel to said disk and to each other, the .WhOle being bolted or otherwise appropriannular spaces or openings-via, between the' end wall of the drum A and the part 1, be-
tween 1" and 1, between I and T, and
between 1 and I.
The disk and rings making up the head,
as shown and. described, should be so spaced as to exclude the passage between them of the pebbles em loyed in reduction, for the:
level of the loa -line as as being above that of the inlet or feed-trunnion and feed-Worm the rate of feed being oi" course proportionate to the number of auxiliary rings used in making up the head.
The exit oi the reduced material is effected through the openings K in the disk L, and
likewise through the annular space formed between the circumference of said d sk and-.-
the end wall of the drum A. Thence it passes out by way of the outlet-trunnion D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
The combination in a ball-mill of a feed mechanism therefor, consisting of a non-perforated plate or disk and a ring-shaped plate or disk spaced between the said norrperforated plate and the feed end of the mill-cylinder, said non-perforated plate and ringshaped plate being parallel each to each substantially as described.
in testimony whereof I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE S. EMERICK.
