SPECIFICATION forming fpart of Letters Patent No. 478,252, dated J'uly 5, 1892. Application filed January 2,7, 1892. Serial No. 419,374. (No model.)

Be it known that I, GEORGE R. CULLING- WORTH, of Mount Vernon, in the county of NVestchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grinding-Mills, of which the following is a specification, reference beingA had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of grinding-mills the principal elements of which are a drum, to Whichrrotary motion is given, and a roller arranged loosely within said drum and having rotary motion imparted to it by the rotation of the drum.
I will proceed to describe my improvement with reference to the drawings, and afterward point out its novelty in claim.
Figure l represents a vertical section parallel with the plane of rotation, of a grindingmill for crushing and pulverizing ore embodying my invention. Fig. 2 representsan axial section of the same.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in both the figures.
A is the drum, represented of cylindrical form and having a concentric circular opening a in one side or end anda concentric cir-v cular opening b in the opposite side or end. B is the loose roller arranged within said drum. One of the openings, as'b, in the said drum is made large enough for the introduction of the said roller. On opposite sides of the drum are concentric cylindrical iianges. C, which are supported and support the drum, with its axis horizontal, on roller-bearings D, I), the said bearings consisting of rollers having their axles d in stationarystandards E," erected on the bed-plate F. The inner periphery ot' the drum is'represented as circumferentially grooved and the exterior of the roller B as circumferentially grooved to correspond with the inner periphery of the drum. The opening d of the drum is made with an outwardly-projecting rim which is received within the inwardly-projecting rim of the stationary circular head G, which is supported on a stationary standard H, erected on the bed-plate. In this stationary head G there is an opening e, to which'V is attached a hopper I, through which the material to be ground is fed to the interior of the drum A. There is another openingfin the said head from which projects a pipe g for the introduction of air or water to the drum. In order to make a moderately-tight connection between the opening d and head G, I have represented a leather packing h.
.I is a conical trunk concentric with the drum A and connected to the exterior thereof around the opening Z). This trunk communicates at its outer end with a stationary outlet-pipeK, which is supported upon a standard L, erected upon the bed-plate F. To preserve a moderately-tight connection between the trunk J and pipe K, I have represented a leather packing z'.
M is a scraper attached'to the stationary head G and it rests upon the roller B for the purpose of scraping the periphery thereof. This scraper is represented as pivoted on a horizontal pin j, which is affixed in the said head. N is another scraper, which is repre.- sented as hung on the same pingl and which is kept in contact with the inner periphery of the drum A by a counter-balance 7c.
Rotary motion may be given to the drum in any suitable manner-as, for instance, by a drivingbelt O, running on the external periphery of the drum itself. The roller being loose within the drum and kept by its own weight at the bottom thereof is caused to rotate by the contact of the drum or of any material that may be between itself and the druln. The material to be ground being fed into the hopper I passes through the opening e into the drum and falling between the inner `periphery of the drum and the roller B is crushed. While the crushing goes on a current of air or water is produced through the drum, entering atfand passing out at K, and along with this current of air or water the ground material is carried olf to a suitable receptacle.
