WALTER JAMES COLES, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND,
ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDGAR ALLEN AND COMPANY. LZIIEITED, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
GRINDING OR CRUSHING MILL.
Application filed March 11, 1924. Serial No. 698,500.
To all "1.0720112. it may concern Be it known that I, T" ALTER JAMns CoLns, a British subject, and residing at Imperial Steel Works, Sheffield, in. the county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grinding or Crushing Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tube mills, ball mills, or other crushing or grinding mills for operating upon ores, clinker, coal, cement, and other like material either in the dry or wet state and of the kind comprising a r0- tating cylinder having two or more compartments through which the material must pass in succession, such compartments being separated by perforated or slotted diaphragms.
The object of the present invention is to devise improved means for regulating the rate of passage of material from one compartment to the next or for regulating the time which the material takes to issue from the mill or the depth of material being ground within the mill without the necessity for dismantling the mill or for changing or otherwise interfering with the diaphragms or perforated or slotted walls.
The invention consists in a grinding or crushing mill having a perforated or slotted diaphragm or wall and one or more rods, valves or other devices by which the total area of opening in the diaphragm or wall may be varied by adjustment from the outside of the mill.
The invention also consists in other details and arrangements hereinafter described or indicated.
The accompanying drawings illustrate one mode of carrying out the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation showing one half of a diaphragm constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional elevation on a smaller scale showing one end of a mill with the diaphragm arranged therein, and
Figures 4. to 8 inclusive are views illustrating details.
In carrying my invention into effect in one convenient manner I provide within the cylinder or drum a of my improved mill one or more diaphragms or walls (indicated generally by the reference letter I) in Figure 8) having a certain number of permanent slots or openings 0 (Figure 1) therein depending upon the minimum rate of feed which is required for the material, and in conjunction with these I provide additional slots or openings 0, the area of opening of which may be varied by means of rods, valves or other like devices operated from the outside of the mill and preferably provided with suitable indicating devices whereby the ex tent of adjustment of the rods or the like may be readily indicated.
In the specific construction illustrated each of such diaphragms or walls is formed from a number of segments d radiating from the centre of the mill and rigidly secured to the shell or, by means of angle segments 6 or other securing or fastening devices, the segments being held together at the centre by being bolted or otherwise secured to a central plate 7 having countersunk holes or being otherwise adapted to take the necessary bolts, rivets or the like.
The segments are separated from one another at adjacent edges in the manner shown in Figure 1 so as to provide the fur-- ther series of openings or apertures in addition to the permanent openings in the segments and each of such spaces between adjacent segments is adapted to be controlled by a rod or valve 9 which may be rotated from the outside of the mill and which is tapered or cut away on one side or otherwise formed so that the width of the slot may be varied from zero to a full opening.
The rods 9 have their bearings in the central plate or bush 7 and in fittings it upon the outside of the shell of the mill or may otherwise be suitably arranged and each are furnished with a pointer i co-operating with a scale it (Figure 7) in order that the exact width of the opening obtained by the rotating of a rod may be readily determined. Such regulating valves may be fitted to compound or other types of diaphragms where the material is taken from a low level in one compartment and delivered at a higher level in the following compartment, and for mills where it is desired to vary the height of the material being ground in the mill the section of each valve may taper (as shown in Fig ure 6) so that the portion of the slot or opening nearest the axis of the mill may be open when that nearest to the periphery is closed or the reverse of such taper (shown in Figure 4) may be provided.

4. A' grinding or crushing mill comprising a shell, a diaphragm dividing the shell into'separate grinding or crushing compartments and formed from a plurality of segments each of which is furnished with a number of openings and which are spaced apart from one another to form slots in said diaphragm and means operable from the exterior of the mill for adjusting the area of opening of each of said slots separately.
5. 1 grinding or crushing mill comprising a shell, a diaphragm dividing the shell into separate grinding or crushing compartments and formed from a plurality of segments each of which is furnished with a number of openings and which are spaced apart from one another to form slots in said diaphragm and a rod adjacent each of said slots and operable from the exterior of the mill for adjusting the area of opening of its corresponding slot.
6. A grinding or crushing mill comprising a shell, a diaphragm dividing the shell nto separate grinding or crushing compartments and having a number of controllable apertures therein and means operable from the exterior of the mill for adjusting the size of each of said controllable apertures.
7. igrinding or crushing mill comprising a shell, a diaphragm dividing the shell into separate grinding or crushing compartments and formed from a plurality of segments spaced apart from one another to form slots therebetween and means operable from the exterior of the mill for adjusting the size of each of said slot openings.
8. A grinding or crushing mill comprising a shell, 'a diaphragm dividing the shell into separate grinding or crushing compart-' ments and formed from aplurality of segments, each of which is furnished with a number of openings and which are spaced apart from one another to form slots in said diaphragm and .means operable from the exterior of the mill for adjusting the area ol opening of each of said slots.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
