Be it known that I, GEORGE D. MONORIEF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the count of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window- Screens, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in window-screens, and has for an object to provide a novel single sash-screen hanger which can be conveniently applied for use, easily opened for any desired purpose, and may be fastened in position for use; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical longitudinal section, ofa window-frame provided with my improvement. Fig. 3 is a detail face view of the hanger. Fig. 4 is an edge view thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail face view of the stop-button. Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating the fastening devices, and Fi 7 is a sectional view showing the screen 0 osed.
The screen A may in general respects be of ordinary construction, having the usual frame which is fitted to the window-frame and is adapted for application thereto" outside of the sashes. This screen A is connected at its upper end with the window-frame by means of hangers B in the form of plates secured to the sides of the screen A at the upper end thereof, preferably by means of nails or brads B, (see Figs. 1 and 4,) and pivoted near their upper ends to the window-frame, preferably by means of the screws B so the screen A may be swung out at its lower end, as will be understood from Fig. 2 of the drawings. This construction is simple, can be easily applied for securing the screen in place, and as the hanger-plates project above the screen when applied, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the screws B are easy of access, so the screen can be readily removed from the window-frame and reapplied, as may be desired. Buttons 0 are pivoted at C to the screenframe on the outer side thereof near its lower swinging edge and project laterally beyond the screen-frame to abut the window-frame,
and so prevent the screen from striking the window when it falls from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position for use. (Showninfull lines in Fig. 7.) When in position for use,
(shown in Fig. 2,) the screen A is fastened by means of a spring-latch D, supported on the inner side of the screen and engaging with a seat-plate E, secured upon the window-sill, as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 6. The latch and seat-plate are beveled at d and 6, respectively, so the latch may be readily moved into engagement with the seat-plate when the screen drops to position for use, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The latch D, it will be noticed, is pivoted at D and has its hooked end D spring-pressed into engagement with the catch E by a spring D said spring acting upon the catch D to draw the screen A inwardly and press its stop devices C against the window-frame in such manner as to hold the screen between the latch and the stop projections in a yielding manner, thus cushioning the screen in a way which prevents it from rattling when the screen is in use.
In the use of the invention the screen may be readily unlatched and-thrown out at the lower edge for the purpose of dusting or cleaning the window and may be quickly readjusted to position for use.
The hangers, latch, and the catch therefor may be made of galvanized iron, malleable cast-iron, or other suitable material and can be cheaply applied to the screen and windowframe in carrying the invention into practice.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The improvement herein described consisting in the combination with the windowframe and a screen having at its upper end hanger-plates projecting beyond the screen and perforated for the passage of pivotscrews, pivot-screws passing through said perforations in the window-frame and forming pivots for the upper end of the screen, a latch pivoted in connection with the screen at the inner lower edge thereof and having a hooked end, a spring actuating said latch, a catch portion on the window-frame for en gagement by the latch, the latter being arholding the screen against rattling when in ranged for operation by its spring to draw use, all substantially as and for the purpose the screen inwardly, and stop devices eX- set forth.
