Description

PATENTED MAY 8 1906.
J. S. JOHNSON.
GATE.
APPLIdATION FILED PEB.16. 1906.
, is F a? W. a M m wihuosca v JOSEPH s. JOHNSON, or Loni, onro, ssieNoR or lapses, or LODI, OHIO.
GATE."
Specification of Letters l atent.
ONE-HALF TO n.
PatentedMay 8, 1906.
Original application filed January 2, 1906, Serial Ito-294,107. Divided and thisanplioation filed February 16,1906. Serial To aZl whom' it may concern: v
Be it known thatI, JosEPHS. JOHNSON, a citizenfbf the United States, residing at Lodi, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gates. of Which the following is a specification.' 4 The invention relates to improvements in farm-gates, and particularly to that class of gates which are adapted to have 'their outer or free ends raised or. elevated to any desired position and automatically locked and sustained in that position for-the passage of small stock thereunder and for permitting the gate whenopened to pass over obstructions, such as uneven. ground, stones, snowbanks,-&c.
a The paramount object of theinvention is .2 to provide a generally-improved gate of this nov class which will be exceedingly simple in construction, cheap of manufacture, and eflicient in use and which will be better adapted to its intended purposes than any other device of. the same class with which I am acquainted. The invention relates particularly to an im-- proved friction-clutch hinge adapted to automatically'lock and sustain thegate in any desired position to which the free-end of the gate may be adjusted and adapted to be applied to any ordinary gate adapted to swing on hinges, and the gate may be provided with any ordinarylatch or locking mechanism, but preferably with the improved locking mechanism illustrated, described, and claimed in my application for Letters Patent for animprovement in gates, filed January 2, 1906,
Serial No. 294,107, of which this" application? isa divisional part:
With these ends in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter de- Ei'rribed, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspectiveview of the gate provided with a fIlCtlOIk' clutch hinge constructed inaccordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of thefrictiori-clutch-hmge member.
Similar numerals of reference designate like parts throughout both the figures of the w g -I Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the gate'in the present instance is mounted and interposed between the usual posts 1 and 2, erected at any desired point, the post 1 being provided with the usual hinge hooks or members 3.
- Referring now to the gate proper, it will be seen that it consists of the usual horizontal lowering the free end of the gate and auto-- matically locking and securing the same in any desired position to which it may be adjusted, the hinge end of the gate has its usual hinge member or bar 5 set in and inclined from the-post 1 and is provided with the piv otally-mounted friction-clutch member 9., ex tending forwardly'and having an opening 10', adaptedto take over and slide upon and grip the hinge-rod S when the freeend of the gate is raised and lowered for ad'usting. The friction-clutch member 9 is a apted to automatically grip thehinge-rod Sat any point to which it may be moved when the free, end
of the gate is elevated, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 therebyautomatically sustaini-ng' the gate. The clutch member 9 is released by means'of a wire 11, secured thereto and extending forwardly toward the free end of "the gate and secured to a small depending operating-lever 12, pivoted to one of the horizontal'hars 4.
From the foregoing description, taken "in. connection with the accompanying drawings,
the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Various changes in the form, proportion,-
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the priniples or sacrificing any of'the advantages of the invention. Having thus described my invention, with out having attempted to set forth all the forrr'isin which it may be made or all the modes of its use, I declare that what .I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A gate, consisting of a series of longitudinal bars secured at their ends by means of vertical members, hinge members secured at the rear thereof, one of the hinge members consisting of a horizontal hinge-rod and a pivotally-mounted clutch member having its free end provided with an opening taking over said hinge-rod, a wire secured to the free end of said clutch member and extending forwardly toward the free end ofthe gate, and a depending operating-lever pivotally secured to one of the horizontal bars and connected to the end of said wire.
2. In agate adapted for vertical adjustment at its free end, a hinge connection connecting its upper rear end to a post and consisting of a hinge-rod suitably mounted, a
ivotally-mounted clutch member having its ree end provided with an opening taking over and adapted to grip said hinge-rod, and means for releasing said clutch member from said hinge-rod.
3. In a gate adapted for vertical adjustment at its free end, a hinge connection consisting of a hinge-rod suitably mounted, a horizontally-arranged clutch member pivotally secured at the upper rear end of the gate and provided with an opening taking over and adapted to grip said hinge-rod, and means connected to said clutch member whereby the same is released from said hinge-rod.
4. In a gate adapted for vertical adjustment at its free end, a hinge connection consisting of a hinge-rod suitably mounted, a clutch member pivotally secured to the gate and provided with an openin at its free end taking over said hinge-rod an adapted to automatically grip the same when the free end of the gate is elevated, and means connected to said clutch member whereby the same may be released from said hinge-rod. 5. In a gate adapted for vertical adjustment at its free end, the combination with a pivotally-mounted hinge-rod, of a pivotallymounted clutch member having its free end provided with an opening taking over said hinge-rod and adapted to automatically grip the-same when the free end of the gate is elevated'and means connected to the free end of said clutchmember whereby the same may be released. I.
6. In a gateadapted for vertical adjustment at its free end, a hinge connection con necting its upper rear end to a post and consisting of a horizontal hinge-rodand a pivot- 4 ally-mounted clutch member having its free end provided with an opening taking over said hinge-rod, a wire secured to the free end of said clutch. member and extending forwardly toward the free end of thegate, and an oper-.
ating-lever piyotally secured to the gate and connected to said wire whereby said, clutch member may be manipulated.
In testimony whereof I have 'afiixed my signature in presence of two subscribing wit- HBSSBS.
