Beit known that I, JOHN IKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deadwood, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oyanid-Tank Gates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to gates designed especially for use in connection with cyanidtanks, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character in which the gate may be readily released to movement to open position and one wherein the gate will when closed be drawn firmly and securely against its seat.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character in which the tubular hub or sleeve of the operating-wheel serves, through engagement with the head of the frame, for locking the gate against movement and one wherein the tension rods or elements included in the 'frame are properly housed to protect them from deleterious` action of the contents of the tank.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section centrally through a device embodying the invention and showing the same applied for use, the gate being in closed position. Fig. 21s asimilar view showing the gate in open position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the frame. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the gate. Fig. 5 is a top, plan view of the gate-carrying member or ring.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the bottom of a tank which is conventionally shown herein and equipped, as usual, with a filtering medium 2, applied to its inner face, the bottom of the tank being provided with a discharge-opening 3. These parts which are conventionally shown herein are of the usual or any preferred construction and material.
Arranged in the opening 3 is an annular metal member 4, provided at its lower edge, which projects slightly below the outer face of the bottom 1, with a semicircular groove 5, designed to receive a packing material 6 and threaded at its upper end into a metal bearing member or disk 7, having an upstanding and outwardlyturned marginal ange 8, which bears at its upper edge on a rubber or other packing gasket 9, suitably seated in the filtering medium 2.
Tapped into the disk 7 is a plurality of engaging members or screw-eyes 10, engaged by the lower hooked ends 1 1 of vertically-uprising tie elements or rods 12, provided at their upper ends with heads 13, which bear upon the upper face of an upper bearing plate or head 14 having suitable openings through which the elements 12 are entered, the elements 12 being housed in tubular casings 15,
which bear at their respective ends on the adjacent faces of the heads 7 and 14, of which the latter is provided with an outwardlyopening centrally-disposed slot 16 for a purpose which will presently ap ear.
Formed on the lower en of the tubular member 4 is a pair of spaced ears 17, in which is pivoted an ear 18, projecting radially from a disk-like gate or valve 19, designed to seat when in closed position against the outer end of member 4 and provided on its inner face with a centrally-disposed lug or ear 20, to which isv pivoted the lower end of a rod or stem 21, having at its upper ,end a relatively movable portion or section 22, pivoted at 23 to the main portion of the stem and threaded into the tubular hub 24 of a hand-wheel 25.
In practice when the parts are in normal position with the gate closed, as in Fig. 1, the section 22 of the stem is entered into the slot 16 with the lower end of hub 24 bearing upon the adjacent face of the upper bearing member or head 14, it being apparent that owing to the hub being threaded onto the gate-operating stem it may be .manipulated for drawing the gate tightly against the tubular member 4, thus to obviate leakage of the contents of the tank, which is further prevented by the packing 6 forming a liquid-tight oint between the valve and its seat. When itis desired to open the gate for discharging the contents ofthe tank, the hand-wheel 25 is turned until the lower end of the hub or sleeve 24 is released from engagement with the head 14, whereupon the section 22 of the valve-stem may be swung laterally outward from the slot 16, thus permitting the gate to move freely to open position, as -illustrated in Fig. 2. It is to be particularly noted in this connection that the valve when in closed position will be held firmly against its seat, but may be quickly released for free movement to open osition, and, further, that the tie rods or e ements 12 will be wholly protected by the casings 15 from injury by the contents of the tank.

From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a simple elicient form of device adrnirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in vieW, it being understood that rninor changes in the details herein set forth may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is l. In a device ofthe class described, a pair of spaced bearing-heads, one of said heads having a slot, and the other being provided with a tubular extension constituting a seat, tie elements operatively engaged With and Jfor connecting said heads, a ate pivoted to the tubular extension and a a ted to close on the seat, a stem operative y connected With the gate and designed for entrance into said slot7 and a hand-Wheel having a tubular hub threaded onto the stem and designed for engagement with the adjacent bearing-head.
2. In a device ofthe class described, a pair of relatively spaced bearing-heads, one of said heads being provided With a slot and the other With a tubular extension constituting a seat, tie elements operatively engaged With and for connecting said heads, tubular cas; ings inclosing said elements, a valve pivotally mounted to close on the seat, a stem en gaged With the valve and adapted to enter the slot, and a member threaded onto the stem for engagement With the adjacent head to maintain the valve in closed position.
3. In a device of the class described, a pair of relatively spaced heads, elements operatively engaged With and connecting the heads, one of the heads having a slot, and the other being provided With a tubular portion constituting a seat, a valve pivoted to close on said seat, a stem engaged With the valve and having a relatively movable section adapted to enter the slot, and a member threaded onto said section and operable for engagement with the adjacent head to maintain the valve in closed position.
