Description

PATENTED MAY 8, 1906.
A. G. BOWEN.
PAPER CLIP.
zmewz- I UNITED STAES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters'Patent.
Patented May a, 1906;
Application ti d March 11, 1903. Serial No. 147.245.
vTo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADNA' G. BOWEN, a
' citizen of the United States, residing-at New York, in the county of New York and State of'NeW York, have inyented a new and use ful Paper Clip orHolder, of which the foilowing is a specification, reference being had-to;
the accompanying drawing hereof.
In the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent plan views oftwo forms of paper clips or holders embodying my invention, in Which A represents the cross-bar, (represented by A A in the modification shown in Fig. 2;) B, the side bars; C, the shoulders; D, the arms;
forming. part E, the forearms 1 2, and 3, the rounded corners or bends, 4, the elbows or bends, z,-..the terminal points; as, .the four points where the arms and forearms press agalnst the cross-bar in sprin -bearing contact therewith.
As wi 1 be readily seen from the drawings,
my invention consists of the cross-bar A, the
side bars B, the shoulders G, the arms D, the forearms E the rounded corners 1 2 3, the elbows 4, andthe points 2, made from a single piece of spring-wire of'varying diameter and length, according to the size of the clip or-holder which is to be made, and in' which the arms and forearms press against the cross-bar at a; in spring-v hearing contact therewith and project beyond to form the elbows 4:, and in the form shown in Fig, 1 the shoulders normally touch the .oneagainst the other at the rounded corners 3. It is also advisable that the points 2 lie well-within the rounded corners'2- and in the same plane.
, This .clip or holder is also adapted to use in holding open books or sheets of music and other papers, and for this purpose it is not necessary or of any advantage that the that, in'the first dplace, it has four points of contact at w an in the second place, the points-z, lying within therounded corners 2, press the article against the side bars and articles of this class is its neat and cross-bar, and the forearms Eextending up-j shoulders, in'this way holding. the article with Y the utmost security consistent with readily applying and removing the same without injuring the article. Another advanta e lies in the fact that the elbows 4 are rounde 'and do not present sharp or ragged points .to tear or injure the article towhic the-clip is.applied. Still another advantage to be considered'in symmetrical appearancev I have sho'wn my invention in a rectangular form, and while I now believe this to be the best manner of construction I do not confine myself to this form, but claim any form performing substantially the same functions and which is covered by the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Let-Y ters Patent, is-.
1. A clip consisting of a single piece of Wire bent to form the cross-bar A, the side bars B having their lower ends connected by said 'cross bar, the-shoulders C extending inwardly toward each other from the upper ends of the bars B respectively and with" their inner ends normally in contact, the arms D extending downwardly from the in ner' ends of the shoulders respectively and below the cross-bar A,- and the forearms E extending upwar-"lly'from'the lower ends of the forearms D respectively to points below and adjacent respectivelyto the junctions of the I side bars B and the shoulders C, the arms and forearms pressing against the crossbar in spring-bearing contact therewith.
2. A clip consisting of a sing epiece of wire bent to form a cross-bar, the side bars B having their lower ends connected by said crossbar, the shoulders (1* extending inwardly toward each other from the upper ends of the bars B respectively, the arms D extending downwardly fromthe inner ends of the shoulders respectively and below the wardly from the lower ends of the-forearms Drespectively to points below and adjacent respectively to the junctions of the side bars B and the shoulders C.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 405 name to this specification in the presence of two subscrlbmg witnesses.
ADNA e. BOWEN.
