Be it known that I, JAMES A. Ross, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
ave invented new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specication.
his invention relates to steam-boilers, and has for its object to provide a better boiler than heretofore, one whichwill generate a greater amount of steam from agiven amount A further object of the invention is to so construct the boiler that the flames and furnace-gases will travel a long course through the boiler, whereby a large boiler-surface is exposed to the heat and the thorough and complete combustion of the fuel is attained.

The grate is indicated at 12 and the door thereto at 13, the bridge-wall at 14, and the outlet to the stack at 15. Extending lengthwise of the combustion-chamber within the inner shell 8 is a baffle-partition 16, which extends from the front of the boiler to near the rear end thereof.
At 17 and 18 are indicated, respectively, lower and upper banks of water-tubes. The lower bank extends from a header 18a, located at the rear wall of the boiler, to the lower section 19 of a header supported in the the boiler, section.

The tubes incline upwardly from the rear header to the front header, and the former is connected to the rear leg 11 of the boiler by a pipe 20. The bank 18 inclines upwardly from the upper section 21 of the front header to a rear header 22, which is connected by a pipe 23 with the steam-dome or upper space 6 of the boiler. The sections 19 and 2l are connected by a passage 24. The flanges which produce this passage give additional strength or rigidity to the header. A cover 25 closes the opening in the rear wall of the boiler between the headers 18a and 22. This cover can be removed when desired to get at the interior of the boiler.
The flames from the fire pass back along the bank of tubes 17 and then around the end of the baffle 16 and forwardly along the bank 1S to the stack 15. The feed-water, which is preferably admitted into one of the legs 9, flows up through the pipe 20 into the header 18a, and thence along through the bank 17 to the headers 19 and 21, and thence through the bank 18 to the header 22, and up the pipe 23 to the steam-dome 6. It will be seen that the water gets the benefit of the re during its course through the banks and also while .in the outer shell or casing, so that a high degree of efficiency is produced, and the long travel of the gases through the combustionchamber gives time for the smoke and other products of combustion to be consumed.
l/Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1. A boiler comprising an upper dome and hollow walls or legs depending therefrom around the combustion chamber, a front header set in the front wall, upper and lower rear headers set in the rear wall and having connecting-pipes therewith, and upper and lower banks of water-tubes connecting the front header and the respective rear headers.
2. A boiler of the wagon type, comprising an upper chamber or dome and legs or hollow walls formed of spaced casings and surrounding the combustion-chamber and having an outlet to the stack extending upwardly through the casings and the dome, at the front thereof, a header supported in the front wall and upper and lower headers supported in the rear wall, a bank of tubes inclined upwardly from the lower rear header to the front header, another bank inclined upwardly from the front header to the upper rear header, connections from the rear head- IOC IIO
