Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 17, 1906.
Application filed March 3, 1.905. Serial No.- 248,267.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. MIDGARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stoughton, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Manifolding Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to im rovements in what may be termed manifolding order books for salesmen.
It has for its object, among other things, more particularly facilitating or expediting the separating and turning of the leaves of the book as in the practical use thereof and to provide for carrying out these ends in a simple, effective, and economical manner.
Said invention consists of certain structural features, substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed, and particularly pointed out by the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a view of a salesmans manifolding order book with the leaves partially shown separated to more fully than would otherwise be the case disclose the salient features of said invention. Fig. 2 is a like view thereof with all the leaves turned for ward, excepting the last, showing more es pecially a piece of extra thickness applied to the inner surface of the rear cover for the holding thereof elevated or raised. Fig. 3 is a modification of the latter disclosed feature. Fig. 4 is a second modification more especially of the features shown in Fig. 1.
In the disclosure of my invention I take an ordinary manifolding sales-book 1, having the usual carbon-sheet 1 facing downward, and produce through its numerous leaves 1 openings, preferably in the form of notches 2, the same being cut into and indenting the leaves at their edges, near the back of the book, either in \I-shaped, curved, or other outlines, as desired Said notches are staggered in their relation one with the other throughout the leaves of the book in order that an imperforate portion of one leaf may come opposite a notch of an adjoining leaf. It will therefore be noted that by applying the point or tapering end of a pencil or other suitable means to the notch in a leaf, as may be required in the practical use of the book, said leaf may be raised or lifted thereby to facilitate the turning of the same, as will be readily appreciated. greatly in contrast with attempting the effective turning of the leaves by applying the finger or thumb to cut-away corner edges thereof, as has been practiced heretofore. In upholding the final leaf of the book, however, a piece of paper 3 is used of extra thickness, suitably secured, as by pasting or otherwise, to the inner surface of the opposite or bottom cover, as'shown, for the ready insertion thereunder of the leaf-turning instrument.
In the modification as disclosed by Fig. 3 metal covers 4 or such covers leather-lined maybe employed, with the bottom one slitted and upraised to form a hump or elevation 4 at an outer corner edge in lieu of the extra thickness of piece to retain the final or last leaf raised, as required.
In the modification of Fig. 4 the leaves of the book, each having a section infolded upon itself, permit of successive leavesbeing notched, the infolded-leaf portion serving to alternate the notches, as shown.
I claim A book of the character described, having one cover provided upon its inner surface and near a lateral edge and one end thereof with a leaf-upholding hump or elevation formed by an up-bent portion of said cover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two subscribing; witnesses.
