REGISTERING DEVICE FOR PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.

T all whom, it may concern.-
'Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM J. RAMSAIER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Registering Device for Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.-
My invention relates to a registering device, and while the principle of the invention is capable of many applications it is particularly designed for registering the number of impressions made by a printing-press and will be described with especial reference to this use.
The principal object of the invention is to provideA for accurate registration of the impressions and also to prevent the recording of movements of the platen of the press unless those movements result in the taking of an impression.
Further objects of the invention will appear in the course of the subjoined description.
Reference is to -be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters ofreference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a "Colts Armory platen printing-press provided with an attachment embodying the principle of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in registering position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the mechanism for operating the registering device proper shown in the other figures. Fig. 4 is a plan view, on an enlarged scale, of a stud which coacts with the rest of the registering apparatus. Fig. 5 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, showing a feature of the invention. Fig. 6 is a sectional view, on an enlarged scale, on the line 6 6' of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of a universal joint constituting a portion of my invention, and Fig. 8 is a front view of the same.
The press illustrated is of the type in which a bridge 10 rocks upon ways 1 1, so as to bring the platen 12 against a form 13, supported in a stationary position. A crank 14 and link 15 are provided in the usual manner for operi ating the bridge, and a cam 16 for adjusting the bridge so as to increase or decrease the force of the impression or to place the bridge in such a position that when the platen is swung toward the form it will not come near enough to form an impression. A counterweight 17, such as is usually employed, is also indicated. Upon the front of the bridge is placed a registering device 18 of any desired form or character, which has a lever 19 to impart motion to the mechanism in the registering device, so as to make a record whenever the lever is operated. The lever is provided with a bolt or screw 20, upon which is pivotally mounted a block in the form of a sphere 21. This block is provided with a passage transverse to the direction of the bolt 20, through which another bolt 22 passes. bolt is pivotally connected with two arms of a yoke 23. This yoke is also provided with another pair of arms 24, extending in the opposite direction and in a plane at right angles to the plane of the firstmentioned pair of arms, and by means of a bolt 25 the second arms are pivotally connected with a second block 26. This block is also provided with a passage at right angles to the direction of the bolt 25, and through this passage passes a bolt 27, with which a rod 28 is pivotally connected. This rod is adjustably connected with a lever 29 by means of a nut 30, operating upon a screw-thread. i (Not shown.)
The lever 29 is pivoted, by means of a screw or bolt 31, upon a bracket 32. This bracket is secured to the bridge in any desired manner, being provided with perforated ears 33 for that purpose. The short arm of the lever is connected by a pivot 34 with a block 35, having a screw threaded rod 36 eX- tending therefrom. This rod is provided with a pair of thumb- nuts 37 and 38 upon opposite sides of the end of the second lever 39, the long arm of this last-mentioned lever having a pivoted block for the rod 36. The lever 39 can be adjusted upon the rod 36 by the operation of the two nuts 38 and 39. At all times one of these nuts acts as a lock for the other.
The lever 39 is pivoted upon the bracket 32 by a screw or bolt 41, and its short arm 42 is provided with a surface 43, which is adapted to come into contact with a roller 44 upon a stud 45, secured in a stationary position upon the stationary part of the frame of the press. This stud is preferably adjustable by means of a bolt 46, so that it can be swung upon an aXis to the proper position for operating the short arm 42 when the bridge is brought into proper position therefor. Thus the adjustment of the whole device is provided for through the parts shown in Figs. 4 and 5.

While the operation of the registering device will thus be made a certainty if the parts are in proper adjustment, as shown in Fig. 2, it is to be understood that this adjustment is so arranged that when the cam 16 is adjusted to such a position that the forward motion of the bridge does not cause the platen to receive an impression from the form the surface 43 is also far enough from the position shown in Fig. 2 to prevent it from coming into contact with the roller 44.
While I have illustrated and described a particular form of my invention, it is to be understood that the latter is not limited to this form, as the principle of the invention can be carried out in other ways.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a printing-press, the combination of a rocking bridge, a platen thereon, means for holding a form, means for adjusting the bridge toward and from the form, a registering device on the bridge, a stud, and means connected with the registering device and adapted to engage the stud for operating the registering device.
2. In a printing-press, the combination of a rocking bridge, a platen thereon, means for holding a form, means for adjusting the bridge toward and from the form, a registering device, a stud, and means connected with the registering device and adapted to engagey the stud for operating the registering device 3 the said stud being so located as to engage said operating means when the platen is so y adjusted as to receive an impression from the form, but to miss it when the platen is so adjusted as to avoid receiving an impression upon the rocking of the bridge to the end of its stroke.
3. The combination with a printing-press having a stud and a rocking bridge, of a registering device mounted o'n the bridge, and operating mechanism for the registering device located in a position to engage the stud when the bridge is rocked.
4. The combination with a printing-press having a stud and a rocking bridge, of a registering device mounted on the bridge, and operating mechanism for the registering device located in a position to engage the stud when the bridge is rocked, said stud being mounted on a stationary part of the machine.
5. The combination with a printing-press having a stud and a rocking bridge, of a registering device mounted on the bridge, and a movable arm on the bridge connected with the registering device for operating it, and adapted -to engage the stud when the bridge is rocked.
6. The combination with a printing-press having a rocking bridge, of a registering device mounted on the bridge, and operating mechanism for the registering device located in a position to engage a stationary part of thc press when the bridge is rocked.
7. The combination with a printing-press having a rocking bridge, of a registering device on the bridge, and means for operating the registering device when the bridge is rocked.
8. The combination with a printing-press having a rocking bridge, of a registering device on the bridge, means for operating the registering device when the bridge is rocked, and means Jfor adjusting said operating means.
9. The combination with a printing-press having a rocking bridge, of a registering device, and means for operating said device only when the rocking bridge is moved to a position to cause an impression to be made.
10. The combination of a movable platen, a registering device, a stationary stud, and means connected with the registering device for engaging the stud during the motion of lthe platen.
11. A registering attachment comprising a movably-mounted registering device, a lever connected therewith, and means for moving the lever relatively to said registering device when the latter reaches a certain position.
12. A registering attachment comprising a movably-mounted registering device, a lever connected therewith, and means for moving the lever relatively to said registering device when the latter reaches a certain position; said means comprising a movable element connected with the lever and a stationary stud.
13. A registering attachment comprising a movably-mounted bracket, two levers pivotally mounted upon the bracket and connected together, means for engaging the arm of one of the levers Jfor operating it, and connections from the other lever to a registering device proper.
14. A registering attachment com rising a pivoted lever having a long arm, a s ort arm and a surface on its short arm for engaging an operating device, a second pivoted lever, adjustable means for connecting the long arm of the first lever with the short arm of the second, and adjustable means for connecting the long arm of the second lever with a registering device.
15. A registering attachment comprising a pivoted lever having a surface on its short arm for engaging an operating device, a second pivoted lever, adjustable means for connecting the long arm of the iirst lever with the short arm of the second, and means for connecting the long arm of the second lever with a registering device; said first-mentioned adjustable means comprising a screw-threaded rod passing tlnough the long arm of the first-mentioned lever, and a pair of nuts on said rod and adapted to engage the opposite sides of said last-mentioned long arm.

device, of a lever, means for operating it, a rod adjustably connected with one arm of the lever, and a universal joint connected with said rod and adapted to transmit motion therefrom to a registering device.
17. A registering device comprising a lever, a block pivotally connected therewith, a yoke pivotally connected with the block, a second block pivotally connected with the yoke, and means for pivotally connecting` the second block with the registering device proper.
18. An attachment for a machine compris ing a block, a yoke having a pair of arms pivotally connected with said block and a second pair of arms located at right angles to the iirst pair of arms, a second block pivotally connected with the last-mentioned pair of arms, and means for pivotally connecting each block 0n a line at right angles to its pivotal connection with the yoke with devices for transmitting motion.
