Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK JANoUsi-rnK, Jr. residing in Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Facilitating the Bronzing of Printed Matter, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in devices for facilitating the bronzing of printed matter.
Under the ordinary method of applying gold and other bronzes to freshlyprinted matter a piece of raw cotton is dipped into the powdered bronze, and the bronze in this manner is applied to the printing. A method of this character is open to considerable objection, inasmuch as in carrying out the same the light bronze powder will necessarily'fly around the room and .settle indiscriminately upon different objects, which is not only detrimental to such objects, but, furthermore, results in considerable waste of powder. a
It is the primary object of my invention to provide a device wherein in the operation of ronzing the disadvantages above referred to are entirely obviated.
With the above primary object in view the invention consists of the devices and parts or the equivalents thereof as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the invention, a part being broken away and showing the flexible sleeves as extended outwardly ready for the insertion of the arms therein. 'Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates a casing which is preferably sus tained at a convenient distance above the floor by means of legs 6. The top of this casing is provided with a large opening 7, which opening is covered by means of a plate 8 of some suitable transparent material, such as glass, the edges of said plate being set in grooves formed in the bordering edges of said top opening. Within the casing and at a desired distance above the bottom of said casing is a horizontal partition 9, forming a table,
handle for convenience in withdrawing the same. The horizontal partition above the two compartments of the drawer 10 is provided with two openings, one of said openings, 14, being above the compartment 11 of the drawer, and the other of said openings, 15, being above the compartment 12 of the drawer. These openings are normally closed, respectively, by means of removable covers 16 and 17. Also beneath the parti tion 9 and toward the rear side of the casing is a drawer 18, which is adapted to be withdrawn rearwardly through an opening 19 in the rear side of the casing. The partition 9 above the drawer 18 is provided with an opening 20, which is normally closed by means of a removable cover 21.
The sides of the casing are provided with long openings 22 and 23, respectively, which are preferably in line with each other and communicate with the space of the casing above the partition 9. These openings are normally closed by means of downwardlyswinging hinged doors 24 and 25, respectively. Each door is releasably held in closed position by means of a catch 26, turned up to engage against the inside of the side piece of the casing, the said catch being rigidly mounted on the inner end of a short spindle 27 extending through the door, the said spindle being provided on its outer end with a handle on a knob 28 for convenience in turning it.

The inner ends of flexible sleeves 32 are secured to the bordering edges of these openings 31, and said sleeves when the device is not in use are extended outwardly, as clearly shown in the drawings. The outer ends of the sleeves are advisably drawn to a closed position by means of encircling elastics 33 33.
The top of the casing, in which is provided the glass-covered opening 8, is preferably in the form of a hinged cover 34, the hinges being at the rear thereof. When this hinged cover is turned downwardly to closed position, it may be detachably locked by means of a locking mechanism 35. By thus providing for the top being opened convenient access may be obtained to the interiorof the casing for the purpose of cleaning.
L The two compartments 11 and .12 maybe conveniently used for the purpose of containing raw cotton and .a supply of bronze-powder, the raw cotton being placed, say, in the compartment 11 and the bronze-powder in the compartment 12.
In the use of the device one of the doors 24 is unlocked and allowed to swin downwardly on its hinges. The printe matter to be bronzed is then pushed through the opening controlled by this door and is supported on the partition 9. A certain amount of the bronze-powder is taken from its compartment of the drawer 10 and placed in the receptacle 29, being thereby in convenient The operator then inserts his arms into the sleeves 32 and forces his arms through the openings 31 and into the space above the partition 9 of the casing, the
sleeves being thereby turned wrong side out and the elastics 33 drawing the sleeves tightly around the wrists of the operator. The operator then takes a required amount of the raw cotton from one of the compartments of;
the drawer 10 and dips said raw cotton into the bronze-powder containedin the receptacle 29. The bronze-powder is then applied to the printed matter lying on the partition 9 by rubbin the raw cotton over said thelight powder to escape, inasmuch as even.
the openings 31, through which the arms are inserted, do not offer a means for the escape of the powder on account of the fact that the sleeves which are drawn around the wrists of the operator prevent the escape of any powder through these openings. It will also be evident that the operator is afforded means for viewing the work as it rogresses through the transparent top 8 of t e casing. When the bronzing operation is completed, the printed matter, with the bronze applied thereto, can either be passed out of the casing through one of the openings 22 or 23 or may be deposited in the drawer 18.
While two of the openings 31 and two sleeves 32, extending from said openings, are desirable, inasmuch as they enable the operator to insert both arms into the casing for the purpose of effecting the bronzing operation, yet do not wish to be understood as specifically limiting myself thereto, inasmuch as only one of said openings and a single sleeve extendin therefrom could be em loyed without departing from the spirit an scope of my invention and satisfactory results secured, although, as stated, the construction shown is the more desirable one. In fact, I would consider the omission altogether of the flexible sleeves and the provision of either one or two of the openings 31 as within the spirit and scope of my invention; but in such case some of the powdered bronze would not only be aflorded an opportunity to escape through the opening or openings, but would also settle on the arm or arms of the operator.
I also wish it understood that other details of construction can be omitted or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of my inventionas for instance, the provision of the drawers, the recep'tacle 29, the glass-covered top opening, and the side 0 enings 22 and 23 are not absolutely essentia What I claim as my invention is 1. In a device for facilitating the bronzing of printed matter, the combination with a casing having an opening for the insertion of the arm of the operator, and the interior space of said casing provided with a table for supporting the printed matter to be bronzed, of a receptacle for the bronze extending laterally outwardly from the casing, and having an open inner side communicating with an opening through the side of the casing.
2. In'a device for facilitating the bronzing of printed matter, the combination of a easing having an opening for the insertion of the arm of the operator, and subdivided inte ,riorly by a horizontal partition, said partition forming a table for supporting the printed matter to be bronzed, a drawer beneath the partition, the said partition provided with an opening communicating with the drawer, and a flexible sleeve extending from the arm-opening of the casing.
3. In a device for facilitating the bronzing of printed matter, the combination of a casing having an opening for the insertion of the arm of the operator, and subdivided interiorly by a horizontal partition, said partition forming a table for supporting the printed matter to be bronzed, a drawerbeneath the partition, said partition provided with an opening leading to the drawer, and a receptacle for the bronze projecting outwardly laterally from a side of the casing, and having an open inner side communicating with an opening in said side of the casing.
4. In a device for facilitating the bronzing of printed matter, the combination of a casing having an opening for the insertion of the arm of the operator, and said casing subdivided interiorly by a horizontal partition, the partition forming a table for supporting the printed matter to be bronzed, a drawer beneath the partition, with means for gaining access through the partition to the drawer, a receptacle for the bronze projecting outwardly laterally from a side of the casing,
and having an open mner side communicatand a flexible sleeve secured in the arm-opening of the casing and extending therefrom.
5. In a device for facilitating the bronzing of printed matter, the combination of a casing having an openingv in its top covered with a transparent material, and said casing also mg with an opening in said side of the casing,
