tors .ol the'generel class or type which is ex f einpliiied in Letters Patent of the United States No. 763 599 Granted and issued to a i n me under ditte of June 28, 1904; and .its ob- ]eets ero to eliord improved iecilities Jfor repecking when required to prevent Weste of n l lubricant by its escape et the ends of' the cellar und to insure e more uniform feed of lu-l bricent to the journal than heretofore.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth.
ln the neooinpenying drawings, Figure l is a front view, partly in section, of e locomotive driving-axle box with my invention ep plied; Fig. :2, a vertical transverse central section through the seme, 3, n similar section, on an enlarged seele, through the mein lubricant-cellar Fig. Il, e 'liront view of the end plate thereof detached, Fig. 5 e vere tieel cent-rel section through the seine; end.
Fig. 6, e. side view of e hook device employed for facilitating the operation of reps-cking.
My invention is herein illustrated es epplied in n locomotive driving-axle box 2, which is adopted to be iitted in jews or pedestuls and supported on one of the journals i of n locoinotive-engine axle in the ordinary manner and is fitted with the usuel brass hearing 3 end with e lower mein .lubricante cellnr Ll, the letter being held removably in piece by rods 7, passing' through lugs 5 on the cellar and adjoining lues 6 on the box. rllhe outer or iront Wei. oll the mein cellar l consists of e, detachable seperate end plete 8, provided With litiernl downwardly-depending lugs 8a, wliich is connected to the cellar Ll by e stud 4, cest on the front thereof, seid stud passing centrally through the end plete end carrying' e. nut 4b, adapted to beer thereon which passes through the side lugs 8a of the end plete.
An open-botto1ned auxiliary lubricentcellar 1l oi sheet metal is titled in the mein eel lor 4, eind the to 3 of the auxiliary cellar li, which is curved transversely to approxinni-tely the radius of the journal on which the axle-box is carried, is perforated to permit the access of lubricant it becomes liquefied Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 26, 1906. Serial ilo. 298.980:
to seid journal without allowing it to feed teo repidly, A. tolloivereplete le, having down- Werdiu -turned edges on its leur sides, is "fitted freely in the mixilinry cellar i i nid pressed up ily toward the curved top thereof hy o spring` which is interposed. between its lower side end the bottoni oi: the .mein seller. The spnee between the eurved top oi' 1 ixilia-ry Celli-tr end the follower-plete ,is in ie operation oii 'the device 'filled rip by send block oi: lubricating materiel l, which greci nelly becomes liqueiied and passes tiirouffh the peri'orntions oi the top et tl Geiler to the journal. The lilo ing materiali is pressed npw'- lower-plete M and spring .iti in sword with the liquefeetion of its ripper@ o the follower late is turned dou/ie. edges rits eely Within the torrauxiliary Geller ii it enters readily :ind easily then-in, thereby ohvietijog linliil o. sticking and iitsunringe nniln'm feed oi" hricnnt to the journal. is the entire senil-- iery coller moves upwardly l the journal in accordance with the weer oi the will loe se .ii het no space is left its end.c` through wl'iieh luhricent escape end he Wasted. l
The degree of weer oi the hloclr: of lnl ricent is shown, and means afforded for depressing the follower-plete l/i to admit of repecking the auxiliary cellar with lubricant when required byone or more indicetoi--rods i8, (two being being shown in this instenee,) which nre conneeted to the hottoin of the 'lollowerplete and pass freely through openings in the bottom of the mein cellztr e, their lower ends being turned into eyes or loops. The indioetoerods may be notched or nierlred :it dilllerentl points in their lei' degree of upwerd treverse of the follower plete, due to the Wearing; ewey oi' the hloclr of lubricant 18,1ney he observed. When the block has become so ter used that it is deemed necessary or desirable to repecli the auxiliary cellar, this operation is performed in the ollowing manner:
T he front eellnr-r1 d 'I is drawn ont so es 'lo cle'er the side lugs n o1 the end plete 5l, tl nut 4b is unscrewed `from the stud e, und Q. t end plete fr; is teken oil", thereby leaving the. entire i'ront end of the main. coller open. The follower-plete is then drewi'i doivn to the bottoni o'l the mein Geller and held there, which is preferably done by using` the deviri shown in Fig. Gfwhieh consists or" tivo heel so that the v LTA einem ended rods 22, connected to a rod 3i at such ting' against the outer end of the main cellaii" distance apart that they may engage the eyes ofthe indicator-rods l5, into which they are hooked, and the follower-plate pulled down to its lowest position, in which it may conveniently beheld during the repair-king: operation by inserting a block of wood between the rod 21 and the pedestal-lnace, (indicated in dottedl lines in Figs. 1 and 2,) which extends across 4the frame-jaws below the axle. The auxiliary cellar 11 is then drawn out through the open front of the main cellar, repaclred with lubricant, reinserted in the main cellar, and the end pla-te, front cellar-rod, and nut of the stud on the front of the main cellar replaced `in'their normal positions.
lt will be 'apparent to those familiar with Jheduties of maintaining locomotive-engines in proper running condition that the auxiliary lubricant-cellar may be much more readily and quickly' removed and replaced than the main cellar and can be better and more thoroughly packed when removed than the maineellar can be when in position, lt will also be seen that its inner surfaces being entirely smooth the resistance to the feed of the lubricant and the liability of sticking of l the followenplate, which are occasioned by the unavoidable roughness' of the cast-iron main cellar, are entirely obviated and a correspondingly freer and more uniform feed of the lubricant; is attained. The prevention of Waste of lubricant 'oy escape thereof at the ends of the cellar also a feature of practical importance.
l claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentml, ln an axle-lubricator, the combination, substantially as set forth, of a main axle-box cellar which is open at its outer or front end, an end piste conl'iected detachably to the outer end of the main cellar, an auxiliary ln bricant-cellar located in the mein Ycellar and removable therefrom through its front end, and having a perforated top plate curved to 'fit an axle-journal, a follower-plate fittingr 'freely in the auxiliary cellar, and a spring interposed between and bearing on the bottom of the main cellar and the lower side of the follower-plate.
