Description

W. W. WHITAKER.
Car-Axle Boxes.
N0.142,752 Patented September9,1873..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WILLIAM W. WHITAKER, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-AXLE BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142.752, dated S ptember 9, 1873; application filed March 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM W. WHITA- KER, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in J ournal-Boxes for Railway-Gars; and I do hereby-declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexecl drawings making part of this specification, in which- A Figure 1 is a perspective View of a journalbox, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section.
The object of this invention is to obviate the necessity of stuffing cotton-waste around the axle, filling the journal-boxes therewith, as is commonly done. My improvement consists in constructing a journal-box with two chanbers, one to receive the axle, and auother placed above it for the waste, there being an open space between the two. The waste will rest above the axle inpartin g to it enough of the oil with which it is saturated for purposes of lubrication, saving'time in inserting or removing the waste, and diminishing the liability of the waste taking fire in case the boxes should become heated. This box is especially adapted to my improved adjustable truck, which is made the subject of another application, but it may be used on other trucks, such as are in common use.
The journal-box is cast in one piece, in the form shown in the drawings, and is bolted to the truck frame B. A chamber at A under the frame is designed to receive the axle in the usual manner. Another chanber, B, is formed in the upper part of the box opening below into a" recess, G, formed in the truckframe. The waste is placed in the chamber B and recess G while the composition boxes are beneath the metallic plate E, extending toward the opening F, through which the oil for their lubrcation drips from the waste which is pressed down upon the axle and saturated with oil. The chamber B is covered by a hinged ]id,'D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An axle-box having the partition E, which forms a support for the waste in the chamber B, and also guides the oil to aperture F, through which the oil fiows upon the journal, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specifioation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM W. WHITAKER.
