UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
BERTR'AND L. FIELD, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO A. L. STRAIGHT, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
SEAT-BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 27, 1906.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, BERTRAND L. FIELD, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Imrovements in Seat-Backs, of which the folowing is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a folding portable seat-back adapted for use on circus, ball park and race track seats, where no backs are usually provided.
The invention consists 1n various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the iii 'h d f I t e accom an g rawings, orming part of this specificailzihn, Figure 1 is a plan. view of a portion of a plank-seat such as is usually provlded in a circus, ball-park, or racetrack for the spectators, with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is a rear view. Fig. 4 is aview of the back detached from the seat and folded.
In the drawings, 2 represents the back or frame, composed, preferably, of heavy wire and bent to conform substantially to the shape of an ordinary chair-back and rovided with cross bars or plates 3 and 4, w 'ch hold the sides of the back in parallel relation with one another and stiffen and brace the same. The cross-bar 3 is preferably wider than the other and is provided with a pocket in the rear, into which an advertising-card 5 may be inserted, as shown in Fig. 3. The back 2 is rovided at its lower end with extensions or eet 6, which are adapted to project in under the rear edge of the plank 7, upon which the spectator is seated. The bar 4 is provided with forwardly-projecting ends 8, to which links 9 are pivoted. These links are 'rovided with a series of holes 10, and a wire ame 11 has outwardly-turned ends 12, which slip into the holes 10 and are adjustable therein to accommodate the seat-back to planks of different width. The forward portion of the frame 11 is provided with a downwardlyturned loop 13, which is ada ted to engage the forward edgeof the plan and support the seat-back in its upright osition. A suitable cushion 14 may be p aced on the seat within the frame 11. 7
To use the device, the frame 11 is adjusted according to the width of the plank, and the feet 6 and looped portion 13 are inserted beneath the plank, and when the person seatedthereon leans back against the back 2.the feet 6 will bear on the under side of the plank, and the tendency of the said back 2 to swingbackward will be prevented by the engagement of theloop 13 with the forward edge of the plank. By swinging the back forward or by disengaging the wire 11 from their links 9 the device can be easily and quickly removed from the plank.
I claim as my invention 1. A folding seat-back comprising a frame 2 having-extensions or feet 6, a wire frame 11 having a looped portion 13 and outwardlyturned ends 12 and links 9 pivotally connected to said frame 2 having holes to receive said ends 12, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a plank 7, of an upright frame 2 having cross-bars and feet or extensions 6 to bear on the under surface of said plank, a wire frame 11 having a looped portion 13 to engage the forward edge of said lank and outwardly-turned ends 12 and inks 9 pivotally connected with said frame 2 and having a series of holes wherein said ends 12 are adjustable.
3. The combination with a lank 7, of a frame 2 having its lower ends ent substantially at right angles to the main portion of the frame and parallel substantially with the bottom of said plank and adapted to bear thereon, the rear edge of the plank fitting into the corner formed by the angle between said lower ends and said frame, and a seat-frame ivotally connected to said back-frame and having a downwardly-turned forward end to clasp the forward edge of said plank and supporting said frame 2 in an inclined position, substantially as described 4. The combination with a plank or seat, of a backframe having its lower ends bent substantially at right angles to the main portion of the frame and parallel substantially with the bottom of said seat and adapted to bear thereon, the rear edge of said seat fitting into the corner formed by the angle between said lower ends and said frame, and means above said seatconnecting it and said frame and securing them together, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 14th day of June, 1905.
