WITNESSES r: INVENTUB UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC B. ROSENTHAIJ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
, CHU BNING ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAAo B. RosENTnAL,
' of the city and county of Philadelphia and or beaten coming in contact with metal parts,
such as the driving devices, and for this purpose I locate the driving devices above a base piece or frame which rests upon and closes the mouth of the jar. The driving devices may be inclosed by a suitable casing to protect them.
The entire attachment is very light, strong,
and simple.
Another object of my invention is to render the attachment convertible, so that it may be used as a churn for butter-making or as an egg-beater or for other purposes by simply changing the agitating-shaft to one having the appropriate form of agitator.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a churn embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with part in 'piece I) of the churn.
vertical section showing the invention applied to an egg-beater, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the driving mechanism with the inclosing housing in vertical section.
a is the jar, usually of pottery, which contains the substances to be beaten or churned. The jar is preferably of reduced diameter or conical at the top to prevent the materials from risinginto the top of the jarduring the churning or beating operations. The open mouth of the jar may be provided with an offset rim a), forming a seat-for the base- This base-piece is preferably formed of wood and of a size to close the to of the jar. To the top of the basepiece is secured at the center a block 0. A shaft (1, carryingat its lower end the dasher e or beater-f, is journaled in the base-piece b and block 0 and is provided at its upper end with a pinion g, engaging a gear h, journaled Specification of Letters Patent. in suitable housings 'i on the block. The gears are inclosed in a casing secured to the block, and the shaft is of the gear it extends laterally through this casing and is connected with a crank m. x
The jar amay be provided on the sides with ears a in which are inserted the bails of a handle? for carrying the churn and jar. The base-piece b may be provided with catches 0 to engage position when the churning devices are applied. I
To render the apparatus convertible, a
For this purpose I have shown the pinion g vert the apparatus, it is only necessary to detach the wooden shaft (1 and its dasher and substitute a beater and its shaft, attaching the pinion by thescrew p.
Besides the great simplicity of the construction it will be noted that all of the driving mechanism and metal parts are housed above the wooden base-piece b, and consequently the cream or contents of the jar cannot come in contact with them. This is of great importance in butter-churns.
' The churning devices may be easily applied and placed in another.
WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is as follows:
A churning attachment consisting of a nonmetallic base-piece adapted to rest upon and close the mouth of the jar, and having u on its upper surface a narrow transverse b ock of substantial height, a shaft journaled in and extending through said block and base-piece and having a churning device upon its lower. end and a pinion on its upper end above the block, side cheeks it carried by the sides of said block and forming housings, a driving-shaft journaled in said housings, a gear carried by said shaft and engaging said set my hand.

attached to the shaft (1 by a screw 1). To conpinion, and a casing carried by said block and i the handle and hold it in upright beater f may be substituted for the dasher e.
to the jar and may be removed from one jar
