IMPROVEMENT -IN WASH-BOILERS.

Be it known that we, J. B SWEETLAND and SILAsT. FENN, of Pontiac, in the county of Oakland, and in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Boilers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', referenceheing hadto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencel marked thereon.

The nature of our invention consists in the construction of a wash-boiler with double bottom, and so arranged that the clothes are not put in the water, but above it, and the .steam and `hot suds pour into them both from above and from'lthe side.y

f In order to enable others' skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will now proceed tor-describe its construction andoperation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a. part of this specification, and in' which- Figure lris'avsectio'nal elevation, and

` A representsa wash-boiler made of any-shape and size desired. On the bottom of saidl boiler is a similar bottom, placed upside down, and soldered to it, forming a double bottom, in which the steam-is generated. The

upperpart'of this double bottom, B, is cut oif, at one end, as shown in fig. 1, allowing free ingress for the water, which can only escape through a holerin the centre ofthe upper bottom. In this' hole a tube, C, is

inserted, through which thesteam and hot suds pass upwards.

This tube may be madefin as many sections as may be required, and it is provided at its upper end with one or more spouts, D D, bent downward, forcing the steam, tte., down ou the clothes. One or more 'side-tubes, E, with spou'ts, may alsobe placed'on the tubo C, so as to force the steam through the clothes from the sides v l as well as from above. Y i v At a suitable distance above thebottom, B, braces a a are secured to the sides of the boiler, and on these` braces the rack F is placed. A i I i I v lThe advantage of having the reversed bottom without any pcrforations is, that the steam can escape only Vas'it comes through thespouts or through the opening where the water goes into the bottom.

The only object ofV having any perforations is to give the water a chance to soak through the clothes and fill the vacuum caused by the water passing up the spout.` We avoid the necessity of having such perforations by using the rack F, which restsV on the braces a a above the reversed bottom, thusrsaviug the power which would otherwise be'lost by giving the steam vent through the perforations instead of passing up the tube C, in the centre. Y

By placing the clothes abovethe water, instead of in it, we get the full force ofthe water from the pipe, and it is not deadened by striking the water. y

Having thus fully described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
