To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER W. HOGAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Durand, in the. county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Appliance for Car-Couplings, of which the following is a lull, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to car-couplings; and it consists, substantially, in the details `of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

The invention has reference more especially to appliances for car-couplings for use in emergency, as when one of the heads of the couplings between cars becomes broken on the road; and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an appliance of this kind of an embodiment to overcome numerous disadvantages and objections attending the use of other appliances hitherto employed for a similar purpose.

A further object is to provide an appliance of this kind which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, besides being easily and quickly secured in place for use, thoroughly eHective and reliable for its purposes, and possessing the capacity for long and repeated service.

The above and additional objects are attained by means substantially such as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved appliance as fitted upon the head of a carcoupling of the J anney type in the event of breakage of some part thereof. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of the appliance detached and minus the fastening devices therefor, and Fig. 4, is a sectional plan view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2.

Before proceeding with a more detailed description it may be stated that in the form of my improvements herein shown I employ an appliance comprising a hood or bonnet of special construction to adapt the appliance to be readily fitted in place over one of the heads of a coupling between cars in the event of breakage of some part of the head-say, for instance, the usual knuckle carried therebycombined with which head or bonnet is a specially-constructed knuckle to take the place of the one broken, special means being also employed for fastening or securing the appliance in position for effective operation, as will presently be explained. The appliance is easily and quickly secured in place and again removed when desired, and while I have herein represented my improvements in a certain preferred embodiment it will be understood that I am not limited thereto in precise detail, since immaterial changes therein may be made coming within the scope of my invention.

Reference being had to the drawings by the designating characters thereon, 1 represents the head of a car-couplingsay of the Janney type-and 2 the neck thereof, said head having the usual member 3, to which the knuckle (not shown) for the head is pivotally mounted to be carried within the curved recess 4 in the head in a manner well understood when the heads at adjacent ends of two cars are brought into contact with each other for the purpose of coupling the cars together. The head is also provided with the usual member 5, between which and the said member 3 the recess 4 is located.

My improved appliance to be used in the event of breakage of the usual knuckle on the head comprises what I have termed a hood or bonnet, constructed of a top-plate 6 and a bottom plate 7, between which at the forward end of the appliance is an integral knuckle 8, integral with which is a jaw 9, the inner face 10 of which is curved in correspondence With the Wall of said curved recess 4, the said knuckle and jaw being connected together at 11 in such manner as to produce a space 12 therebetween, in which is received in the use of the appliance the usual knuckle on the head of the car-coupling with which the head on which my appliance is employed is to be associated, so that when the usual knuckle of either head of the coupling between cars is broken my improved appliance takes the place thereof without undue delay, as is frequently occasioned by the breaking of couplings between cars on the road.

At one side thereof my improved appliance is practically entirely open, while at the other side thereof the appliance is formed with an opening 13, through which in the use of the appliance the member 5 of the head projects, as shown in Fig. 4, while at the same time the member 3 of the head projects through the open side of the appliance, as also shown in Fig. 4. At the side of the appliance in which is formed the opening 13 the said top and bottom plates 6 and 7 are integrally connected IOO IOS

together by the vertically-disposed member 14, having at the ends thereof the lugs or projections 15, while at the opposite or open side of the appliance the said top and bottom plates are provided with corresponding lugs or projections 16, each set of lugs or projections 15 and 16 having coinciding openings 17 extending transversely therethrough, through which extend rods or bolts 18 for securing the appliance upon the head 1, substantially as indicated in Figs. 1 and 4.

At the inner or rearward end thereof the appliance is provided at its open side with a detachable or movable member 19, having lugs or projections 20 corresponding to the lugs or projections '16 and having openings therethrough coinciding with the openings in said last-mentioned lugs or projections, and through which also extend the rods or bolts 18, it being noted that the latter are each provided at one end with a head 21, while the same is threaded for a suitable distance from its other end, as indicated at 22, for the reception of a nut 23 to be tightened upon the rod or bolt both to secure the appliance in place upon the head 4 and retain the movable or detachable member 19 in place, so as to prevent the appliance from slipping 0H the head laterally. The member 19 is made detachable or removable from the appliance for the purpose of enabling the latter to be slipped over the head 4 from one side and in such manner as to bring the parts in the desired relations to each other, as shown and as already referred to.

It will be noted that the connection between the knuckle 8 and jaw 10 is also such that the appliance may be used upon a coupling-head embodying a different form of member 3 thereof from that herein shown, and it will be seen that the appliance is strong and effective in use or operation.

In some instances I may form the top and bottom plates 6 and 7 each with an opening 24 for enabling access to be had to an opening 25, such as is provided in some forms of coupling-heads of the type herein referred to.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a hood adapted to be applied to a head of a car-coupling, having a recess therein, and provided with a knuckle andy a jaw, separated by a space, the jaw being formed in correspondence with the recess.

2. An appliance of the character specified, comprising a hoodadaptcd to be applied to a hood of a car-coupling, having an openl side, and an opening in its opposite side, and provided with means for engagement therewith of a knuckle carried by the other head ofy the coupling7 a detachable member applied to the open side of the appliance, and means for securing said member to the appliance, and for securing the latter in place upon said firstnamed head.

3. An appliance for car-coupling heads having recesses, comprising a knuckle and a jaw separated by a space, the jaw being formed in correspondence with the recess, and means for securing the appliance tothe head with the jaw in the recess.
