Description
m. 686,5l8. I Patented Nov. I2, l90l.
\ c. c. HAZLETT & w. A. man;
CAR COUPLING.
mn filed. Dec, 20 1900 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTOPHER C. HAZLETT AND WILLIAM A. RICH, OF ASHLAND, OHIO.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N 0. 686,518, dated November 12, 1901.
Application filed December 20, 1900. Serial No. 40,539. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTOPHER C. HAZ LETT and WILLIAM A. HIGH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Ash land, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Couplers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in car-couplers, the object being to provide improved means for antomatically throwing the knuckle outward when released from its locking means.
The present invention relates more particularly to a car-coupler of the J annoy type.
The invention has for its object to construct a device of this class that will be extremely simple, strong, durable, and highly eificient in its operation.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate'corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the drawhead, having our improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the upper portion of the lug and pin. Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the pivot-pin.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the draw-head, and 2 the knuckle thereof, the latter being rotatably mounted in the lugs 3 and 4, formed integral with the draw-head. The lug 3 has formed on its upper face ratchet-teeth 5, extending radially upon said face.
The reference-numeral 6 represents a pin extending through the lugs 3 and 4and through the knuckle 2, said pin carrying at its upper extremity a head 7, which carries ratchetteeth 8 on its under face, said ratchet-teeth 8 registering with the ratchet-teeth 5 of the lug 3. The lower extremity of the said pin 6 has formed therein a slot 9 to receive a key-wedge 10, to which is secured a helical spring 11, which is adapted to encircle the lower end of the pin 6, the other end of said spiral spring being attached at 12 to the under face of the knuckle. The helical spring is so constructed and arranged as to normally retain the knuckle outwardly, said spring also having a downward pressure against the keywedge, which will tend to engage the ratchetteeth of the head with the ratchet-teeth of the lug and tend to lock the same.
Upon the uncoupling of the cars the tension of the spring 11 will serve to withdraw the knuckle from the draw-head and to maintain the same in this position, so that the cars may be again readily coupled when brought together. I
The many advantages obtained by the use of ourimprovements will be readily apparent, and it is thought a further detail description as to the operation of the device is unnecessary.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of our invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- I 1. In a car-coupler, the combination with a draw-head, a pin secured in said draw-head carrying at its upper extremityahead, ratchetteeth secured to the under face of said head, ratchet-teeth arranged upon said draw-head engaging the ratchet-teeth of the head, a
engaging the ratchet-teeth of the head, a In testimony whereof we aflix our signaknuckle mounted upon said pin, a key-wedge tures in the presence of two witnesses. secured in the lower end of said pin, and a helical spring encircling the pin between the g g fi gg g g gi wedge and the draw-head, said spring hav- J ingits one end connected to the knuckle and Witnesses:
its other end connected to the key-Wedge car- JOHN NOLAND,
ried by the pin substantially as described. SARAH I. HAZLETT.
