Description

'No. 813,731. 4 ,PATENTED FEB. 27, 1906. J. MURMANS. AERATING DEVICE FOR MATTRESSES.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 16, 1905.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN MURMA-N-S, oF cLEvELA -i), OHIO.
AEFIATING DEVICE FORMATTREss'Es.
To all whom it may concern;
Be a known that I, JOHN MUBMAN S, a taizen of the United States, and a res dent of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Aerating Devices for Mattresses, of which I hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, 'an,d exact descri tion,
such as will enable others skilled in t e 'art to which it appertains tomake and use the same.
The invention has for its objects to provide simple and eflicient means for aerating and disinfecting the mattresses employe for general usewithout opening the mat-'- tresses or removing them from the beds, and
also to sterilize and purify mattresses employed for patients having contagious diseases, as in hospitals.
Heretofore in private homes or in hospitals where there are many patients and all mattresses are in constant-use the loss of time in' opening up and renovating them and in re storing them to their. pro er condition for use is a most objectionab e feature re ardless of the .labor and expense invo ved. With this improved appliance, however, any bed can be thoroughly'disinfected and reno- -vated. with little loss of time and-very little labor. A
The invention comprises a tubular; e'rforated appliance or appliances for intro ncing volatile disinfecting fluids or gases u der' pressure into the mattress, where they are readil distributed throughout the mattress,
and a so has reference to means for in ecting.
.the.mattresses with fresh and pure air to renovatethem. In this manner formaldehyde' or other volatile germacides can be introduced a'n'd all interior parts of the mattress made sterile and sanitary.
The invention consists, primarily, in a flexible tube providedwith'perforations in its periphery, and in the accom anying appliancesof a receptacle for the uid or as and in a forceump with which to apply t e fluid or gas, an in the details of construction and combination and arran ement. of parts, as
hereinafter described, s own in the acco mpanyin drawings, and specifically pointed out int eclaims.1 p
Inthe accompanying drawings, Fig lire 1 is a perspective view of a mattress in w 'ch the Specification of Letters Patent.
Lpplicationflled Maylfi, 1 906- Serial No. 260,553.
' tubesare inserted, showing aforce pumlp and disinfectingfluid or gas receptacle. 'g. 2 is a transverse section of a mattress, showing a longitudinal central section of the deliverytube with'its stop-valve. verse section of containing-tube.
In the views, 1 is the mattress.
2 isa receptacle containing the disinfecting or renovating fluid or gas. 3 is a force-pump connected therewith.
1 4 is a tube or fluid container closed at the inner-end and having its outer extremiti communicatin by means of a tube 5, wit
the contents 0 the-receptacle. This tube is perforated upon the periphe 'at 6 with numerous small 0 enings, so t at the fluid can evaporate an the gases produced by the fluid volatilizes very guickly or if the dis infectant is in the form 0 a gas, openings can be made in the tube at the sides or bottom;
but with fluids it is desirable that the tube should be able to retain a quantit of the fluid for slow eva oration, so that t e action is of a longer greater The inner extremity of the tube is uration and the effect thereb be required to thoroughly distribute the dis" infecting fluid or air, so that all portions'of 1' the interior of the mattress will be thoroughly treated.
Having described the invention, what I claim as "new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf 1. In a device-for the purpose described, the combination with a mattress, of a tube adapted to be inserted therein for permanent use, the said tube being erforated throughout its len 'th, a check-Va vein the outer end of said tu e, and means for supplying said Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
