Description

ELI K. GARRETSON, OF OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 81,358, dated August 25, 1868.
IMPROVED BXPANDING-BOTTOM FOR BEDS, SEATS, dto.
@he Srrlgehule nitriet tu in time Estufa @nient mit uniting gint nf tte simu.
Bc it known that I, ELI K. GARRETSON, of Ottawa, in' the county of La Salle, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful device for beds, cots, sofas, lounges, and scat-bottoms, called ElivK. Garretso'n's Pressure-Expanding Bottom, for beds, seats, die.; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear,
und exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, in whichl Figure 1,is a. perspective view.
Figure 2, a. plant Figure 3, end elevation, showing its adaptation to bedsteads, seats, &c.
Figure 4, diagram of extremity of one of cross-pieces, showingmede of attaching sucking, or support for mattress or seat, to side-stretchers.
I connect theordinary two pair of cross-legs of a cot by side-stretchers C O, by a dove-tail or other fastening. The stretehers may be of any required size, to suit requirements. l
Over the outward.edges of the stretchers the sack-ing or bands E are fastened by the following means: The sucking has sewcd into its outer edge, along the length ofit, a cord, n, which is brought over the edge 'of stretcher C, and kept down by fastening over it the rod or slat 7i, which runs the length of stretcher, and is fastened withvserews, or equivalents, to perpendicular outer edge of stretcher, just above the confined cord n, just mentioned. This strip or rod may be onehalf to three-fourths of an inch Wide, showing a. semieircular face, but fitting flat against stretcher, the saeking or support of bed or scat passing between it and stretcher, the lower edge of rod fitting against the rope edging of seeking, eonfiningsame, and perfectly securing edge of sacking. v
For the fastening of said rod t to stretcher C, screws, nails, or other fastenings may be used.
The cross-legs A B are made of any'required size, to suit beds, lounges, cots, pews, railway-seats, cite., and for most purposesl it may-be most convenient to be set into a frame, which will surround ,the lower sides of cushion or mattress, as the case may be, the upper outer end of each cross-leg having a pulley or friction-roller fastened thereto, the circumference of which will project beyond end of leg far enough te allow the legs to settle or subside under pressure.
The pulleys er rollers are seen best in fig. 3z' z', where also the side-frame or enclosing-box m is figured bv the dotted lines.
In the application of this bottom to a bedsteud, the slats or sacking is removed-from bedstead, and this apparatus (complctein g. 1) placed within-hedstead m, the rollers z'z' touching sides of same, as in fig. 3, letter m.
The middle of seeking E of this bottom is supported by a flexible bar, D, running longitudinally from one pair of legs to the other, and bolted, screwed, or fastened in seine permanent manner, at cach end, to an upright support, c, the lower end of which support rests on the belt or fastening uniting the legs, the bolt passing through both support e and legs A. B. This bar D is intended to extend or spread the sucking E to its utmost extent, by its pressure on the axis of cross-legs, thus widening their arms and tightening the sucking; thus the sucking is made to accommodate its tension to the weight imposed thereon.
The-bar I), I make of size to suit requirements, and either of wood or metal, and having its upper surface slightly rounded, Yand should be made, Vif of wood, thin enough to be slightly exible; if of iron, it may have a much greater breadth than thickness, so as to give it the required ilcxibility. This bar D may be fastened by tapes, or other like fastenings, to the seeking E, at intervals, along the under sideof sucking.
The operation of this bed or sont bottom is as follows: On pressure on mattress or cushion F, the greater portion of weight comes on to the seeking over t'he horizontal bar D, the perpendicular supports of which, e e, resting on the bolts y, at the intersection of cross-legs A D, extend the legs, and tighten the sucking, so as to make a perfectly level bed or seat.
This invention may be applied to any purpose which it might suit.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'lhe construction ot`-a cot, bed, or seat, wit-ha flexible bar, D,in combination with legs A B, stretchers C C, supports e e, bolts G G, and friction-rollers i z', the bottom of thc cot being of canvas or other suitable materials, and secured by means of cords, fastened to the edges, with reds h It and strctchcrs C C, substantially in the* manner and for the purposes described.
